Donald Cerrone is a special MMA athlete.
Instead of waiting for the “right” fight to present itself, Cerrone always makes himself available for the UFC. That’s why officials offered him a bout with Benson Henderson on just two weeks notice.
Cerrone will meet Henderson for a third time this Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 59 in the co-main event. His coach, Mike Winkeljohn, doesn’t want this to become a trend, but he has complete confidence in “Cowboy.”
“It’s Cowboy, that what he does,” said Winkeljohn, during a recent interview with Submission Radio. “I love it because Cowboy is a guy that is unconventional, but he’s a fighter at heart. He’ll fight anyone at anytime. He’s also probably one of our most loyal team members. He’s great to have.
“I wouldn’t want him to do a whole bunch of these in a right because it will break his body down, but I’m actually excited that he took this fight.”
Cerrone is just as reckless outside of the Octagon as he is inside of it, and Winkeljohn wouldn’t want it any other way.
Donald is that guy,” he said. “He’s not gonna listen to me. He wouldn’t listen to me anyway. He wouldn’t even listen to his best friend. I think he was told long ago by someone close to him to not let people tell you what to do and live your own life, and I think he’s playing that out.
“I think that actually relaxes Donald.”
