UFC 189: Robbie Lawler-Rory MacDonald Added

ufc 189

Despite being the “bigger” championship match in terms of size, Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald will play second-fiddle at UFC 189.

UFC president Dana White confirmed on Wednesday that Lawler’s first welterweight title defense will come July 11 at the pay-per-view vs. MacDonald.

It will serve as the co-main event behind Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor for the featherweight title. The event takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Lawler (25-10) has won 10 of 14 bouts inside the Octagon over two stints, including a 2014 victory vs. Johny Hendricks for the belt. “Ruthless” was the last man to defeat MacDonald, scoring a win over the Canadian on his way to first competing for the belt.

Since that loss to Lawler, MacDonald (18-2) has won three in a row, including a recent finish of Tarec Saffiedine. He was set to meet Hector Lombard, but Lombard failed a January drug test and the bout was scrapped.
