UFC 188 Predictions From Staff Of UFC Tonight

“UFC Tonight” hosts Daniel Cormier and Kenny Florian were joined by Miesha Tate recently to discuss Saturday night’s UFC 188 card.

The trio offered up their thoughts and predictions regarding the main event between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum for the unified heavyweight title.

Velasquez is returning to the Octagon for the first time since 2013, as knee injuries kept him on the sidelines. He holds notable wins over Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos and Antonio Silva during his run.

“This guy is non-stop action,” Florian said. “His whole game is to pressure his opponent and make them suffer and see who breaks first. He’s one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC.”

Werdum became the interim champion when he finished Mark Hunt last year in Mexico. He’s bested Fedor Emelianenko, Roy Nelson and countless others during his illustrious career.

“Fabricio Werdum has gotten better with time. At 37, he the best we’ve seen him,” Cormier said. “He has confidence. We always talk about how important confidence is. What he did with Travis Browne, walking him down with his striking, was impressive. And then to knock out Mark Hunt was great.”

Cormier, a close friend and training partner with Velasquez under the AKA banner, believes there is one key to victory.

“He has to apply constant pressure. He has to use his boxing,” Cormier said. “He keeps everything tight and crisp. He has to mix in takedowns – he can’t abandon his wrestling.”

For Werdum, it is all about keeping distance between himself and Velasquez, according to Florian.

“His first key is to control the distance. He’s got to keep Cain on the outside. He has to vary the attack and mix it up. And he has to look for a submission in a transition.”
