Ben Rothwell Details Level Of Respect For UFC Champion

While some have found excuses for Cain Velasquez and his recent loss to Fabricio Werdum, a member of the UFC’s heavyweight division isn’t buying into it.

Ben Rothwell, a top contender in his own right after a string of recent victories, recently told Submission Radio that he was completely impressed by Werdum’s dominant performance vs. Velasquez.

“People aren’t giving Werdum enough credit,” Rothwell said. “Everybody was counting Werdum out. I knew that Cain had his hands full, I knew that Werdum is a legitimate heavyweight.

“He’s one of the best in the world for real and he proved it again. I knew the man was preparing very well and I couldn’t emphasis it enough that people need to give credit when credit’s due.”

Rothwell (35-9) has won his last three, including finishes vs. Matt Mitrione, Alistair Overeem and Brandon Vera. He’s been inside the Octagon with Velasquez, suffering a second round TKO loss back in 2009.

Following his submission victory vs. Mitrione, Rothwell stated his desire to fight in a top contender or world title match next. He continues to believe it is “his time” in the division.

“I want to prove everything I say,” he said. “Now, if and when I do fight Werdum, I want the world to know – as far as I’m concerned – he is the baddest heavyweight on the planet.

“I want them to know he is the toughest challenge to date so that when I beat him, people understand exactly what I’ve done.”
