Daniel Cormier’s first UFC light heavyweight title defense will come in October at UFC 192, as Cormier faces Alexander Gustafsson.
The fight was announced during UFC Fight Night 72. It will take place October 3 from Houston’s Toyota Center.
UFC officials stated earlier this year that Gustafsson, and not Ryan Bader, would be the first challenger to Cormier.
Cormier won the vacant title when he finished Anthony Johnson after officials stripped Jon Jones of the title. Gustafsson, who challenged Jones and lost via decision, was defeated by Johnson previously.
“Let’s go man,” Cormier said on Twitter after the announcement. “Can’t wait to grind.”
The 35-year-old Cormier (16-1) has bested Johnson, Dan Henderson, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir and Josh Barnett during his career. Gustafsson (16-3) won 15 of his first 16 pro fights, but is just 1-2 in his last three.
“I really want all my fans support and presence when I take home the UFC belt to Sweden,” Gustafsson posted on social media.”
The card will also feature the return of Rashad Evans, as the former champion meets Bader in a likely title-eliminator.
