WSOF: Jake Shields Has Big Plans For Champion

wsof

Jake Shields is a former Strikeforce champion and title contender when he was in the UFC.

This Saturday night, Shields will take on Rousimar Palhares for World Series of Fighting welterweight gold.

Shields (31-7-1) is a perfect 2-0 since coming over to the WSOF, scoring first round finishes vs. Brian Foster and Ryan Ford. In all, Shields has 12 submission wins to his credit – and would like nothing more than making Palhares No. 13.

“If I have it I’m going to try and break it,” said Shields, during a recent interview with Submission Radio, regarding a submission attempt on Palhares. “I mean obviously if he taps I’m gonna stop. I’m not gonna risk getting suspended over something stupid like that, but I’m definitely gonna grab it try to rip anything I get.”

Palhares has made headlines several times after not releasing submission attempts after the fighter had tapped. That includes a win over Mike Pierce that led to his 2013 release from the UFC.

A veteran of the sport, Shields isn’t buying the “misunderstood” claim made by Palhares regarding the submission holds.

“I think he’s a really bad person who enjoys hurting people, or he’s really stupid,” he said. “There’s no way that he just, you know, he’d have to be really stupid to not understand that he holds a submission too long. We’re submission guys, that’s what we do. We train all the time, we’re used to people tapping in training. He’s been hurting people in training as well.”
