Bellator 142: One Shining Night For “Mr. Wonderful”

phil davis

Phil Davis picked up the first championship of his MMA career Saturday night, winning the one-night Bellator light heavyweight tournament with a first round finish of Francis Carmont.

But for “Mr. Wonderful,” this was just the first step towards achieving real gold.

Davis will now fight for the Bellator title after taking out Emanuel Newton and Carmont at Bellator: Dynamite 1 in a special one-night tourney. Carmont replaced Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, who had advanced, but was ruled medically unfit to compete.

“I don’t even know what just happened,” Davis said. “I had the best training camp (of my career). I have the best coaches, the best people around me.”

Davis left the UFC earlier this year after a split decision loss to Ryan Bader. He went 1-2 in his last three after winning 12 of his first 14 pro fights. That run included victories vs. Lyoto Machida, Vinny Magalhaes and Alexander Gustafsson.

Prior to embarking on his MMA career, Davis was a four-time All-American for Penn State University on the wrestling mats. He won a national title in 2008, but only needed his hands vs. Carmont.

Davis caught him in the first round an finished quickly, much like he did when he locked up the fifth submission win of his career earlier in the night vs. Newton.
