Former Ultimate Fighter winner Warlley Alves won the battle of unbeatens on the UFC 194 prelims Saturday night, submitting Colby Covington in the first round.
Alves (11-0), who is well-known for his guillotine chokes, locked up one early on Covington before the former college wrestler broke free.
The second time, though, was too much, as Covington attempted a slam that only tightened the grip and forced the tap.
“Everyone is scared of my kickboxing,” he said, “so we’ve been working on the (submission game).”
Alves earned his seventh submission win and third inside the Octagon. Five of those have been with the guillotine choke.
The loss was the first of Covington’s career, dropping him to 8-1.
