Abel Trujillo kicked off the first main card of 2016 with a bang, scoring a first round submission win over Tony Sims at UFC 195 Saturday night.
For Trujillo, it marked the first submission win inside the Octagon, and just the second overall for the Blackzilians fighter.
“The guillotine is one of my strongest chokes,” he said. “(Sims) just gave it to me so I took what he gave me.”
Sims appeared to be getting the better of Trujillo after working for a takedown, but off the scramble, Trujillo saw his opening. He quickly clamped on the choke and didn’t let up, forcing the tap.
“It’s MMA,” he said. “(Sims) is a great striker, but I knew I was better overall.”
The win snapped a two-fight losing skid for Trujillo, who improved to 13-7 overall. He was coming off submission losses of his own to Gleison Tibau and Tony Ferguson.
