UFC Fight Night 84’s Mark Hunt Wanted Different Opponent

Mark Hunt sees Frank Mir as a stepping stone to competing for the UFC heavyweight title this year.

Hunt and Mir will square off in Australia in the main event of UFC Fight Night 84 in March, and while he didn’t ask for Mir, Hunt still plans on doing what he does best.

“I think Frank Mir is gonna be trying to take me down and I’m gonna be knocking him out,” he said, during a recent interview with Submission Radio. “So I think after he realizes that he can’t take me down, then he’ll end up being knocked out, like the rest of them.”

Hunt (11-10-1) will turn 42 years old just a few days after the bout and was hoping to celebrate with a win over Junior dos Santos or Alistair Overeem. Both would have been rematches for the “Super Samoan,” as dos Santos defeated him via knockout in 2013 and Overeem scored a 2008 submission win.

Still, the veteran realizes that a victory over a former champion like Mir can still set the course in front of him.

“I asked for Overeem or JDS for this fight but I wasn’t allowed. And you know, I have to fight Frank Mir. He’s just as accomplished as me and was a world UFC champion,” he said. “So if beat Mir, then I can probably get a Top-5 guy and then probably I can begin my bidding for a world title shot hopefully. So hopefully by the end of the year maybe, if I won both fights.”
