UFC 198: Former Champ Weighs In On Main Event

Junior dos Santos has shared the Octagon with both current UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and his next challenger, Stipe Miocic.

The two will meet in May at UFC 198, and “Cigano,” who has bested both, believes Miocic will leave Brazil with the belt in tow.

“Werdum is excellent on the ground, but I don’t see him taking anyone down,” said dos Santos, in a recent interview with MMAFighting.com. “If the fight stays standing, I see Miocic as the favorite. If it goes to the ground, it’s going to be fast. But I see Miocic as the favorite standing.

“Comparing their qualities, I don’t see Werdum taking him down, so it’s going to be a stand-up fight and Miocic has an advantage.”

For dos Santos, who meets Ben Rothwell in April, the idea that he already owns wins over champion and challenger sits well with him. The 32-year-old is just 2-3 over his last five, but won 15 of his first 16 pro bouts.

“I think it’s great that I already beat the two guys in the next title fight,” he said. “I think it’s great that the division is stacked. When you have someone holding the belt for so long… It’s positive in a way, yes, but the division is in a good moment.”
