UFC 199: Lamas Sees Himself As Next Contender

While the UFC featherweight title remains on ice, and an interim belt is set to be handed out in July, Ricardo Lamas plans to stay active.

After working his way into the role of No. 1 contender once before, Lamas believes a victory over Max Holloway at UFC 199 in June will solidify his standing once more in the division.

Lamas talked about Holloway during a recent appearance on Submission Radio.

“I don’t think he’s ever faced somebody like me,” he said. “I think the closest kind of person that he has faced, who’s similar to me because he’s a wrestler, is Dennis Bermudez. And that’s a fight that he lost. And I think it’s gonna go the same way, man. I mean, I think my wrestling is too strong and I’m not someone that just takes you down and sits on top of you.

“When I take you down, I’m punishing you. And when we’re on the feet, I’m punishing you. You could see that in my last fight with Diego (Sanchez). They had to wheel him out in a wheelchair backstage after the fight. But you know, I go in there to fight, man. That’s it.”

Conor McGregor, the current champion, is likely to fight Nate Diaz at welterweight later this year, while Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar battle for the interim belt at UFC 200. A win over Holloway could lead Lamas to the role of next-in-line.

“Definitely. I think that with a win over Max, it should put me next in line for the winner of Aldo/Edgar after they unify the belt with McGregor,” he said. “I think I should be next after that with a win over Max Holloway, for sure.”
