UFC FN 89: Prelim Play-By-Play And Results

The Ultimate Fighting Championship rolled into Ottawa, Ontario earlier this week for its latest Fight Night card, and the prelims are underway. Let’s get to the action.

Fight Pass Prelims

Colby Covington def. Jonathan Meunier via submission (rear-naked-choke) R3, 4:06

Ali Bagautinov def. Geane Herrera via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Randa Markos def. Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Elias Theodorou vs Sam Alvey

Round 1: Theodorou lands first strike and it’s a leg kick. Another one. Theodorou continues to extend his arms and fire kicks. Alvey has thrown one strike so far. Front kick from Theodorou. Some boos ring out. More kicks from Theodorou but most of them are missing or are getting blocked. Alvey misses with a big left. Theodorou fires a kick to the body. Alvey flurries in and the round ends.

Round 2: Theodorou continues to throw kicks to the body and legs of Alvey. Latter rushes in and they clinch up briefly. Alvey launches a hard inside leg kick. Theodorou shoots in from way out and Alvey squashes it. Alvey chucks in an uppercut that lands and they clinch up against the cage. John McCarthy splits them up. Wow. Huge jumping kick from Theodorou thumps into Alvey’s arm.  Theodorou clinches up. Round ends.

Round 3: Alvey likely needs a stoppage to win this. Alvey with a front kick. Theodorou continues to stay light on his feet and is keeping Alvey at bay with kicks. Theodorou clinches up briefly after Alvey throws a leg kick. Alvey lands a nice right hook. Theodorou misses with a spinning backfist. Boos start up again. Right hook from Alvey just misses. Theodorou changes levels and pushes Alvey to the cage. Alvey needs to do something fast. More boos and the final horn goes.

Chris Beal vs Joe Soto

Round 1: Soto tries for a single leg TD but can’t get it. Quick exchange in the pocket. Soto shoots in again but can’t take it down. Both men continue to say light on their feet. Soto is pressing forward; Beal is doing a great job of avoiding strikes. Soto can’t get the TD. Nice flurry from Beal. Another combo from Beal. Round ends.

Round 2: Beal comes with a 1-2.  Beal is flicking out a nice jab. Soto lands a leg kick. Soto lands a right but Beal counters with left hook. Wow. Beal plants a couple of hard shots. Latter is really starting to control the fight. Another combo from Beal. Soto sticks a hard jab that makes Beal stumble.  Soto waves Beal on. Soto is coming with a lot of pressure. Wow. Soto wobbles Beal with a shot but eats a big counter not long after. Action spills to the floor and Beal’s forced to defend a guillotine. Soto has Beal’s back. Soto gives up the position and is on top, working from side mount. Round ends.

Round 3: Both bantamweights land some shots early on. Soto goes for a cartwheel kick but misses. Beal cracks Soto with a shot that forces him to back up. Wow. Both men chuck big hooks. Beal plants a hard right. Good fight. Beal lands a couple of jabs. Soto has a TD attempt stopped. Beal lands another big hook. Another TD attempt from Soto and he drags Beal to the floor. Wow. Soto has back of Beal. Soto is hunting for the rear-naked-choke. Beal taps. What a win for Soto. Crazy.

Joe Soto def. Chris Beal via submission (rear-naked-choke) R3, 3:39

Tamdan McCrory vs Krzysztof Jotko

Round 1: Jotko with legkick early on. McCrory fires a kick at the body. Wow. Jotko floors McCrory with a huge left overhand. McCrory takes a couple more punches and that’s it. What a knockout.

Misha Cirkunov vs. Ion Cutelaba 

Round 1: Cirkunov fires  a kick to the body. Cutelaba is winging big punches Cirkunov plants a left. Another body kick from Cutelaba. Wow. Cirkunov goes down briefly from a shot but is back up. Cutelaba just misses with another huge right. Cirkunov cracks Cutelaba with a massive left but he just eats it. Cirkunov tries for a throw but winds up on the bottom. Crazy action. Cirkunov works his way out and up. They aren’t holding back when they throw punches; that’s for sure. Cutelaba attempts a spinning backfist but takes a counter. Hard left from Cirkunov. And another. Round ends.

Round 2: Cirkunov charges in but Cutelaba counters. Cirkunov flurries in and lands a right. Cutelaba spins with a back fist but misses. Another left from Cirkunov lands. Body kick from the latter. Couple jabs from Cirkunov. Cutelaba continues to wing big punches. Nice uppercut from Cirkunov. Cutelaba charges in and they clinch up. Round ends.

Round 3: Both light-heavyweights chuck big punches. Cirkunov fires a Superman punch and then scores a double leg. Nicely done. Wow. Cirkunov quickly transitions into a beautiful arm-triangle-choke and that’s it. What a finish.

Misha Cirkunov def. Ion Cutelaba via submission (arm-triangle-choke) R3, 1:22

Jason Saggo vs Leandro Silva

Round 1: Not much going on in opening moments of bout. Saggo lands a leg kick. Silva fires back with a kick to the body. Another leg kick from Saggo. Silva throws a kick but Saggo catches it, winds up on top. Saggo is in sidemount. Saggo lands a few punches from above. Elbow from Saggo. Silva is looking for the sweep. Saggo postures up and plants a couple more punches. Silva gets to his feet. Silva flurries in and lands some punches. Silva comes with a spinning kick right at the horn.

Round 2: Silva lands a left and just misses with a headkick. Saggo lands a legkick. Silva fires another headkick that’s blocked. Latter plants a left straight. Silva throws a knee and is looking for the TD. Saggo defends. Silva comes forward and misses with a left. Saggo goes high with a kick. Silva clinches up briefly. Silva comes with a hard leg kick. Saggo changes levels and pushes Silva to the cage. Nice body kick from Saggo. Another hard legkick from Silva. Saggo charges in but is taken down after attempting a high kick. Round ends.

Round 3: It’s likely one round a piece. Silva with a nice spinning kick to the thigh. Saggo is stepping up his attacks. Silva counters with a left. Hard left from Saggo lands. Now they’re getting after it. Saggo shoots in but Silva defends. Headkick from Saggo is blocked. Silva spins with a kick. Saggo returns with a body kick. More kicks from Saggo. Silva calls Saggo on who responds with some punches. Silva sticks a left hand. Saggo has legkick caught and winds up on the floor. Saggo fires an upkick. Silva comes with a flurry of hammer fists. Final horn goes. Close fight.
