UFC 212: Max Holloway Had No Issues Fighting Aldo In Brazil

Interim UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway was a guest on “Submission Radio” recently, and “Blessed” talked about a wide range of subjects.

Holloway will unify the titles when he faces Jose Aldo at UFC 212 from Brazil later this year.

On how Max got a role in a new upcoming movie and his response to people saying he was running away from Aldo

“I got the movie through UFC. Dana White called me, asked me if I want to be in it. You know, I was supposed to fight. Everyone thought I was running away from Jose Aldo just because I didn’t want to take the fight on February 11th. I saw a doctor (who) told me I couldn’t take a fight because of my ankle. If you look at it, I never ran away from a fight in my life, so why would I start now? I definitely wasn’t scared against Jose Aldo, come on. It was crazy, people were giving me this and that. And when you look at it, I fought Cub on lesser, shorter notice after a fight. And I fought Cub in April, like April 18th, and I fought in February 14th. You know, today I fought Cole Miller and then the next month I fought in April. Whatever, so that way crazy. But the movie role (came about) because the UFC came up with it. They knew I couldn’t fight in February. I got offered the movie role and I took it because he (Aldo) was running his mouth, saying that he was gonna fight for the interim 155 title in March. And after his fights, you know he takes a little while off. So I was like, I was not gonna wait around for this guy. And the shoot is in March to April, so I was like, you know what, let’s do it. I had to try out for the part too, so there was no guarantee I’d get it, but I said I’d rather do something with my time instead of sit around and wait for the guy. And here it is, I got the movie part. I sent a video that I had to do, you know, reading the lines and they liked it. And here I am, I’m gonna be up there. I’m gonna leave to be up there to shoot pretty soon and It’s gonna be a month of shooting, and then right when I get back to Hawaii it’ll be straight on full-blown camp and make history come June 3rd.”

Reaction to when he saw Aldo trying to move up a division

“Ah man, it’s just crazy, man. It’s crazy. I thought we were all men here. They’re trying to chase one guy around, like trying to get this and that. It is what it is. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. You know, I ain’t chasing nobody. I’m gonna make my damn self my own money fight. And I was kind of irritated. It means that I may have to be out a little bit longer, and that’s why I got the movie, so I’m fine with it, but at the end of the day it was just kind of mind-boggling. You know, I was just mind blown. That’s it. It is what it is. He wants his way too, but that’s one thing I can control, is my emotions. I can’t control his. So if that’s what he wanna do, that’s what he wanna do, but all I know is I’m gonna get ready. I’m focused on 145 at the moment, and if opportunities present itself I’m gonna take it, but I’m not gonna go out there and start begging like half of these guys are doing out there.”

On fans saying McGregor is still the real Featherweight champion because he never lost his belt

“I don’t know what people are talking about when they say that he’s still the champion. If he’s still the champion, why doesn’t he have the belt?”

“He can say all he wants, but at the end of the day he don’t have the title anymore. Just move on. If he was really the champ he would have came down to fight and defended it when the UFC asked him to do it a bunch of times. But it didn’t happen, it didn’t work out and now we’ve moved on. It’s like, stop talking about the past. Everybody keeps bringing up the past, the past. We’re living in the present, this is the present. This is now and what he did was in the past. This is the present and come June 3rd I will show everyone what the present and the future is gonna start looking like.”

What Max’s reaction was to fighting in Brazil

“My reaction was, you have the contract – as soon as I found the contract that I had the contract in my email, I emailed it back in one minute signed. This is what kings do. Kings go to other kings’ villages and they take over. That’s what I plan on come June 3rd. I will go there and show everybody why I’m the king. And what better place to do it than in his backyard, in his old village? So it’s what kings do. I’m gonna show the world once again why I’m one of the best fighters to ever grace the octagon.”

Advantages over Aldo

“That’s the beauty of MMA, man, I’d rather show than talk. And I tell people all the time, tune in June 3rd, you guys are gonna see. You guys are gonna see. This guy is a legend. I respect him, of course, but at the end of the day, he’s gotta see me at the end of the day on June 3rd in that octagon. I will show the world, I will show the world. I’ve been telling you guys, it’s time to jump ships now. It’s time to jump ship now, because on June 3rd it’s gonna be another one. It’s gonna be another one and I’m gonna leave you guys scratching your head, thinking like, oh damn, what’s next?”

If Max will look to become a two-division champion after he beats Aldo or if he’s content having rematches in the featherweight division

“We’ll see what happens when the time comes. People keep on forgetting I’m only 25. I’m growing, I’m a Hawaiian Samoan. Us Polynesians like to eat, so we’ll see what happens. But I wanna defend the 145 belt. That’s on my mind. I want to get it, I want to defend it a bunch of times. I’ll do my thing here. Like I said before, I’m not trying to race through the division, I’m trying to kill it. I’m trying to destroy these guys.”

“I don’t want there to be no what-ifs – “what if Max fought this guy, what if Max fought that guy”? I wanna fight them all. I wanna fight them and show them, like no, this is mine, I run this division. That’s what I want to do. So we’ll see what happens though. We’ll see how my body reacts, we’ll see what happens. Our body changes fight to fight, so we’ll see how long I can keep this cut up. The cut’s been fine, for me it’s been fine, and I just listen to my body, and when it’s time go up, it’s time to go up.”
