Vera-Jones Likely To Headline First UFC Versus Event

Looks like Brandon Vera was right about fighting Jon Jones on March 21 after all.
After news broke that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira had fractured his ankle and would be unable to fight Vera at UFC 109, Vera tweeted that he would be facing Jon Jones on March 21 in Denver, Colorado instead. Shortly thereafter, several sites reported the date was in fact March 31, but now those same outlets are saying Vera was correct. Both fighters have agreed to fight in what will likely be the main event of the UFC’s first event on Versus.
Jon Jones and Brandon Vera will meet in a light heavyweight headliner at a UFC event on March 21 in Denver, Sherdog.com has learned from multiple sources.
The event and its venue have not been officially announced by the promotion yet, though Sherdog.com has learned the event will air live on Versus.
Not a bad headliner for what Dana White described will be similar in scope to a Fight Night card. Having said that, UFC 109 really could have used Vera-Jones considering the remaining co-headliners are Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman and Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago. At least things start picking up again with UFC 110.

Lil Nog Withdraws From UFC 109 With Broken Ankle (Update II: Vera vs Jones)

Here we go again.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is the latest high-profile UFC fighter to be removed from an event poster.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has withdrawn from his co-headlining light heavyweight contest against Brandon Vera at UFC 109 on Feb. 6 in Las Vegas due to injury, Sherdog.com has learned from multiple sources.
Nogueira, the brother of former UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, suffered a fractured ankle, said both sources. Nogueira’s manager, Ed Soares, could not be initially reached to confirm the injury.
Very disappointing news for not only Nogueira fans, but also for Lil Nog himself. He made a huge splash in the UFC with a big win over a very hyped Luiz Cane only to lose all his momentum to a pretty serious injury.
No word yet on who will replace him against Brandon Vera.

Update: Assuming this isn’t a fake Twitter account, Brandon Vera says he’s fighting Jon Jones on March 27. Via BE:
just found out I’m fighting Jon Bones Jones on March 21st in Denver Colorado. hope u heard it here first!!!!
What’s odd about this is there’s no UFC event currently scheduled or rumored for March 21 and you would think they would just keep him at UFC 109, so maybe it is a fake Twitter account or there was some miscommunication. I’ll keep you posted. Jon Jones would make a damn fine replacement though if it turns out to be true.
Update 2: It looks like that was indeed Vera and his information is legit, he just messed up the date.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the organization that the UFC is targeting Vera for a potential headlining contest against Jon Jones (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) at an as-yet-unannounced UFC Fight Night 21 event on March 31 in Denver, Colo.

Vera ‘Pissed,’ But Takes Responsibility For Loss To Couture

“I’m pissed, I’m really pissed, but the sport of MMA, she, MMA, is a b—h and if you let it go to the judges, you let it out of your hands, you know? So, I’m going to take the blame for this loss. I’m going to man up…I should have finished it. I had a couple of opportunities to during the fight that I should have finished it. I’m super happy I got to fight Randy Couture, my hero, my legend, and let the rest of the light heavyweight division know that I’m going to whip you’re a– if you get into the Octagon with me.”
—Brandon Vera reacting to losing the decision to Randy Couture in the UFC 105 main event
It’s definitely a tough pill to swallow for Brandon Vera. He clearly inflicted the most damage, but Randy controlled him the clinch for a large portion of the fight. How you scored it was probably based on which you thought was more significant. I thought the damage was, but the judges obviously thought otherwise.
If nothing else, hopefully this will light a fire under Brandon’s ass to start finishing people like he used to.
