Matt Mitrione-Brendan Schaub Latest Addition To UFC On FOX 8

Heavyweights Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub will test their skills against one another this July, as UFC officials have added them to UFC on FOX 8.

The bout will pit the former season-mates of The Ultimate Fighter against each other on July 27 from Seattle. No word where the fight will land as far as the main or prelim card.

Mitrione (6-2), of course, has been in the news for his suspension handed down by the UFC after comments made concerning transgender fighter Fallon Fox.

While most feel Mitrione was let off easy, the UFC has yet to really distinguish what they did behind the scenes to Mitrione.

Schaub (9-3) has posted a 5-3 UFC record since making it to the finals of TUF. Both fighters are also ex-NFL players.

UFC’s Brendan Schaub, Shinya Aoki To Compete In Jiu-Jitsu Event This June

UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub will face Roberto Abreu this June in a jiu-jitsu match. The event was for Metamoris 2 earlier this week.

Schaub’s opponent is a four-time no-gi world champion. It will air on pay-per-view from Los Angeles.

“My jiu-jitsu super match is at a catch-weight of 230,” Schaub posted on Twitter. “Diet starts in 3..2..1 let’s do this! I’m 253 pounds right now ”

Shinya Aoki, the current ONE FC lightweight champion, faces 2011 Mundials runner-up Kron Gracie in the main event.

Others expected to compete include Braulio Estima, Michelle Nicolini, Andre Galvao and Ryan Hall.

“Jiu Jitsu tournaments have devolved, especially at the elite level, to a game based on who can score points with a sweep or dominant position in the last few seconds of a match to win,” said Ralek Gracie, founder of Meatomoris in a press release. “I founded Metamoris to create a tournament where submissions are the only goal, not points. With the introduction of judges, we will avoid draws. Someone in a fight is always sharper. And now, the fighter who controls the bout with technique, the fighter who shows more varied and frequent submission acquisition, will get his hand raised.”

UFC on Fuel TV 9: Matches to Make for the Main Card Winners

Gegard Mousasi v. Ryan Bader

Well, we saw what we all expected to see. Gegard Mousasi dominated Ilir Latifi with the jab. He looked lackadaisical and bored but that’s the way he always looks. He commented that he was injured during the fight as well which could have played into his slow performance. Overall though, he dominated a much weaker opponent throughout the entire match. Honestly, the match I want to see is the originally scheduled match but due to injuries that won’t happen. Mousasi didn’t sustain any damage but it was reported by MMAFighting that Mousasi will undergo knee surgery for a previous injury. Meanwhile, I’m sure Gustafsson will be given a fight quickly because his cut was not all that bad. Ryan Bader is aiming for a summer return from his own knee injury. Put the two together and see if Mousasi can defend the takedowns of Bader; if Mousasi can’t stay on his feet against Bader, he has no business fighting Jon Jones.

Ross Pearson v. Bobby Green

Ross Pearson also suffered an injury pre-fight. According to MMAJunkie, Pearson injured his food before the bout. That didn’t stop him from beating down Ryan Couture, however. He now has two straight wins at lightweight so it’s time to give him a top-25 guy and see how he fares. Bobby Green just submitted Jacob Volkmann at UFC 156 and is also looking for a step up in competition. Green would provide a stiff test to Pearson’s grappling and it would be interesting to see if he would be able to stay on his feet.

Matt Mitrione v. Brendan Schaub

“Meathead” made quick work of Philip De Fries. Brendan Schaub recently got back to his winning ways against Lavar Johnson at UFC 157. The two strikers should make for a violence-filled heavyweight matchup. Both guys hit hard and I doubt the fight would go to a decision. Also, the two never fought on The Ultimate Fighter so it will be a reunion of sorts.

Brad Pickett v. Urijah Faber/Scott Jorgensen

The Bantamweight division still hasn’t exactly filled out yet so Pickett is able to move quickly up the ladder with two straight wins. He looked technically sound against Mike Easton and he deserves to get a step closer to a title shot. Urijah Faber and Scott Jorgensen are going at it next week on the finale of the Ultimate Fighter so the winner will be a nice step up for Brad Pickett.

Diego Brandao v. Conor McGregor

Both of these guys looked like beasts on Saturday. Let’s put them in a cage together and see whether or not Brandao’s grappling or McGregor’s striking will come out victorious. Brandao has had issues with cardio but with two wins over decent competition, he may be slowly establishing himself in the featherweight division. He has the skills to be dangerous, but McGregor looks downright scary at this point.

Akira Corassani v. Max Holloway/Dennis Bermudez

Corassani definitely got a big win for his career but he is still at the bottom of the featherweight division. The winner of the bout between Holloway and Bermudez at UFC 160 would be a good way to get him another fight. Max Holloway just got a win over Leonard Garcia and he is still young in his career. Rushing him at this point would be a mistake so a guy like Corassani will provide a small step up in competition. Corassani brings experience and toughness but will have a hard time sticking around long term in the UFC’s deep featherweight division.

Chad Mendes Off UFC 157 Card, Brendan Schaub-Lavar Johnson Promoted To PPV

Chad Mendes will not be fighting on February 23 at UFC 157, as the promotion was unable to secure a replacement for Manny Gamburyan.

Gamburyan and Mendes were set to kick-start the pay-per-view main card from Anaheim, but Gamburyan suffered a broken thumb and fractured elbow in training recently.

In place of the bout, heavyweights Brendan Schaub and Lavar Johnson are expected to be featured on the main card.

Brendan Schaub-Lavar Johnson Re-Booked For UFC 157

Heavyweights Brendan Schaub and Lavar Johnson won’t have to wait long to face off, as MMAjunkie.com is reporting the two have agreed to meet in February at UFC 157.

The two were originally set to collide this past weekend, but a groin injury knocked Johnson off the card. No replacement was found, and Schaub was removed, as well.

UFC 157 takes place February 23 from Anaheim’s Honda Center. The placement of the bout is currently unknown.

Schaub (8-3) is coming off a pair of losses to Ben Rothwell and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He is a former runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter.

Johnson (17-6) suffered his first UFC loss recently, falling to Stefan Struve. The ex-Strikeforce competitor had won his first two UFC bouts.

Lavar Johnson Looking To Have Brendan Schaub Fight Rescheduled After Rehab

Lavar Johnson didn’t want to pull out of a planned heavyweight encounter with Brendan Schaub at UFC on Fox 5.

However, Johnson’s injured groin had other thoughts, forcing “Big” out of the fight. Schaub has also been removed, as a replacement fighter was unable to be found on such short notice.

Johnson (17-6) sent a message to Schaub (8-2) via Twitter after news of the fight cancellation was made, informing “The Hybrid” that he hopes the two can tangle down the road.

Schaub responded, writing, “part of the game my man.” The former Ultimate Fighter runner-up said he was disappointed in missing out on competing on the card.

Lavar Johnson Hurt, Off UFC On Fox 5

Brendan Schaub has been left without a dance partner for UFC on Fox 5, as Lavar Johnson has suffered an injury in training.

“Lavar Johnson is out of the Fox prelims with a pulled groin,” UFC president Dana White posted on Twitter. “He was fighting Brendan Schaub.”

No replacement has been named, as the card takes place December 8 from Seattle. Schaub-Johnson was expected to be the featured bout on the FX-televised prelims.

Brendan Schaub Says Lavar Johnson Is Next

BJPenn.com meets up with Brendan Schaub who confirms his next opponent is indeed Lavar Johnson.

Brendan Schaub-Lavar Johnson, Mike Swick-Matt Brown Added To UFC On Fox 5

A pair of fights have been confirmed by UFC officials for December’s UFC on Fox 5 card. The event takes place from the KeyArena in Seattle on December 8.

Heavyweights Brendan Schaub and Lavar Johnson will meet, along with Mike Swick and Matt Brown. The placement of either card is currently unknown, though three of the usual four fights for the main card are already filled.

Schaub (8-3) will be trying to snap a two-fight losing skid. The Ultimate Fighter runner-up had won four straight before back-to-back defeats vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Ben Rothwell.

Johnson (17-6) entered the UFC from Strikeforce and won his first two fights in impressive fashion. However, he was stopped by Stefan Struve in his previous fight.

Swick (15-4) improved to 10-3 inside the Octagon by knockout out DaMarques Johnson. He recently signed a new four-fight deal with the company.

Brown (15-11) is on a three-fight win streak himself, improving his UFC standing to 8-5.

Brendan Schaub-Lavar Johnson Planned For UFC 154

Brendan Schaub told MMAjunkie.com Radio recently that he is likely headed for UFC 154 and a heavyweight meeting with Lavar Johnson.

UFC 154 takes place November 17 from Montreal’s Bell Centre. The main event is expected to feature Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit meeting for the undisputed UFC welterweight title.

Schaub (8-3) won four consecutive fights before dropping back-to-back bouts to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Ben Rothwell.

Against Johnson, the former Ultimate Fighter finalist will be facing a knockout machine. Johnson (17-6) won his first two fights inside the Octagon before being submitted by Stefan Struve earlier this year.
