The UFC Reportedly Heading To Dublin, Ireland For UFC 93; Rich Franklin Possibly Headlining

UFC LogoIt looks like the UFC is holding two events in January again next year. According to a report Yahoo! EuroSport, the UFC is headed to the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland on Jan. 17 to hold UFC 93. The Super Bowl weekend event which is believed to be headlined by the GSP vs. BJ Penn II mega fight would become UFC 94.

It appears they already have a few names in mind for the trip to Ireland.

And early indications suggest Rich Franklin could possibly take on Chuck Liddell or Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in a stand-out headliner at the new arena, which officially opens on December 21.

Another rumoured fight being considered for the event is the much-anticipated welterweight showdown between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.

The Octagon. Forrest Griffin. Chuck Liddell. Blood. Fine Art?

It’s the infamous $2,500 OCTAGON™ book (also available in a $7,500 “deluxe” edition) on display at a fine art gallery in New York City.

Is it me or does Chuck seem a little out of place? My personal favorite is the blown up images of blood splattered on the mat. That’s fine art?! Who knew?

As part of the UFC’s international expansion plan, the UFC is making a major promotional push in the Philippines with plans of running an event there sometime in 2009. Brandon Vera, because of his Filipino descent, has been the face of the expansion into the Philippines thus far, however as you can see from the above video, Chuck Liddell is pretty popular there too.

UFC 88 ‘Breakthrough’ Fighter Payouts

MoneyThe GAEC has released the fighter payouts for UFC 88 “Breakthrough.” Keep in mind, these figures represent the base contracted pay the fighter receives from the promotion. These figures do not include any additional “locker room” bonuses or sponsorship money, which in many cases exceeds a fighter’s base pay. These numbers also do not account for taxes, insurance, and license fees.

Not surprisingly, Chuck Liddell was by far and away the night’s big money winner earning $500k to get knocked out cold. Rashad Evans, Dan Henderson, and Rich Franklin did well for themselves taking home $120k, $250k, and $100k, respectively.

Is The FIGHT! Magazine Cover MMA’s Madden Curse?

Chuck Liddell FIGHT! Magazine CoverI’m sure most of you have probably heard about the “Madden Curse.” If not, nearly every NFL player that has graced the cover of EA’s Madden football game since 2000 either suffered a serious injury, performed poorly, or abruptly retired in the season immediately following their appearance. More on that here. There’s also the Sports Illustrated cover jinx which is eerily similar.

Well, MMA may have it’s own curse too. I was thumbing through the latest issue of FIGHT! Magazine and a certain reader’s question caught my eye in the mailbag section.

THE COVER CURSE

It is now official! When you guys put a fighter on the cover the same month as his biggest fight to date… guess what? He loses! Think I’m making this up? Ask Brock, Hendo, Jens, and now you can add Rampage to the list! As the magazine’s number one fan, I unfortunately must ban Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Paulo Fihlo, Brian Stann or Miguel Torres from making any cover appearances during the same month in which they are to do battle. I’m sure you’ll understand.
