UFC Makes Rashad Evans-Dan Henderson New UFC 161 Main Event

And just like that, UFC 161 and the fine folks in Canada have a new main event, as light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson replace interim UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland.

Barao suffered torn ligaments in his foot and was forced to remove himself from the June 15 card in Winnipeg.

Evans, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, enters looking to snap a two-fight losing skid to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Jon Jones. “Suga” is 17-3-1 in his MMA career.

Henderson, meanwhile, was defeated by Lyoto Machida earlier this year, dropping his overall record to 29-9. He has won four of his last five fights overall.

Rashad Evans Ignores Retirement Talk, Preparing For Dan Henderson, Title Run

Rashad Evans knows what it takes to work to the top of the UFC’s 205-pound division.

After claiming a title on The Ultimate Fighter, “Suga” defeated Forrest Griffin to become the UFC light heavyweight champion.

Since dropping the belt to Lyoto Machida, though, Evans has had troubles inside the Octagon, including recent back-to-back losses to Jon Jones and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

However, upon signing up to meet Dan Henderson later this year, Evans made sure to let everyone know while appearing on MMAjunkie.com Radio recently that retirement is not in his future.

I lose a couple fights, and they’re like, ‘You should retire!’ Fight fans, they get nuts. If you go out there and don’t look sharp, they want you to retire right away.

The meeting with Henderson is one Evans has been hoping for, as he admires the former multi-promotion champ.

“Henderson’s got those bombs,” Evans said. “He’s one of my favorite fighters, so it’s going to be fun to fight him.”

Who pulls out the victory in this key 205-pound tilt, Henderson or Evans?

Rashad Evans Not Worried About His Future In The UFC

Despite two straight losses, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans is unfazed by any talk of his release should he fail to defeat Dan Henderson later this year.

Evans, who was unable to get on track vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira earlier this year, talked about his loss on UFC Tonight earlier this week.

I watched a little bit of the fight. It was a lackluster performance on my part. It was one of those life lessons. You watch a fight like that, and it’s like, ‘What was I thinking? Where was my head?’ It took me weeks to get my head around what I did.

Evans discussed a potential release by stating, “No, I’m not worried about losing my job. I put in a lot of good fights in the UFC and I’m confident that I’m not going to lose my next fight.”

In the same sentence, though, Evans admitted that a third consecutive defeat would mean a change in weight classes, adding, “I would consider dropping down. If I drop down and things weren’t going right, then I would think about retiring.”

Evans and Henderson is an excellent match up of two top 205-pounders ever, as both are excellent wrestlers with devastating knockout power. It will be interesting to see which “Suga” shows up come fight night.

Rashad Evans Elaborates On Nogueira Loss

Rashad compares fighting to basketball in a surprisingly valid and enlightening analogy. Rashad reminds us he only lost a fight; he simply had an off night, and he plans to come back with full force.

Rashad Evans Blames ‘Mental Fog’ For Loss To Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans didn’t seem like himself during a recent loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Now, in an interview with ESPN, “Suga” is letting it be known that he wasn’t the same entering the fight.

Evans will get his chance to snap a two-fight losing skid later this year when he meets Dan Henderson.

“Having a failed marriage and not being able to see your kids on a daily basis, that’s what hurts me every single day,” Evans said. “I feel like I failed in my marriage and I failed my kids by not being in their lives on a daily basis. It’s because they live in Chicago and in order for me to train I live in South Florida for the most part. I have a place in Chicago, but I’m rarely ever there because I’m always trying to train. It bothers me and I can’t say that it doesn’t.”

Evans’ divorce was finalized after a loss to Jon Jones in 2012 for the UFC light heavyweight title. He spent the remainder of the year on the sidelines, only to fall to Nogueira upon returning.

Now, with a key match up vs. Henderson on the horizon, Evans is anxious to get back to work.

“I’m happy about this fight [against Henderson],” Evans said. “Having the chance to fight somebody like Dan is a big deal, especially after not having the performance I would have liked [against Nogueira]. It’s good to get in there with somebody like Dan and answer a lot of critics and to show everybody that I am still one of the best guys in the weight class. I couldn’t find my rhythm against Nogueira; I couldn’t find my timing. It was just one of those things. It was like I was in a mental fog.”

While both Evans and “Hendo” are coming off losses, this is a bout that has me excited. These are two legends in the 205-pound division and they should put on a show.

Rashad Evans Thinks Jones/Sonnen Will Be More Competitive Than We Think

Rashad Evans is unsure what’s next for him, but he is sure that UFC 159′s Main Event will be a good fight. He feels Chael Sonnen has the tools needed to even the playing field against the current champion Jon Jones.

UFC Makes Dan Henderson-Rashad Evans Official For UFC 161

The UFC’s June card in Winnipeg is setting up to be stacked from top to bottom, as officials confirmed Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans for UFC 161.

The card takes place June 15 from the MTS Centre. Henderson-Evans joins Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley, as previously announced fights.

None of the three, however, are scheduled to serve as the main event. The promotion still plans to announce that, and it could be UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson’s return from a torn labrum. Johnson was knocked out of a fight with John Moraga due to the injury, and has targeted June for his return.

Henderson (29-9) will be seeking a seventh UFC victory in 10 fights vs. Evans (17-3-1). Both men are coming off losses, as “Hendo” was topped by Lyoto Machida and “Suga” suffered a loss to Nogueira.

UFC 161 Headed For Canada, Set To Feature Dan Henderson-Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

A pair of interesting light heavyweight fights are in the works for the UFC’s scheduled Canadian card in June, according to Tatame.com.

Dan Henderson would meet Rashad Evans, while Mauricio “Shogun” Rua gets Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 161.

Henderson (29-9) is coming off a loss to Lyoto Machida last month, while Evans (17-3-1) was dealt a second straight defeat at the hands of Nogueira.

Rua (21-7) defeated Nogueira (21-5) when they met in PRIDE back in 2005. He, however, is also coming off a loss, as Alexander Gustafsson bested him in late 2012.

Nogueira is the lone fighter who won his last match, as mentioned above when he earned a decision over Evans.

“Minotauro” could make a huge jump in the rankings with another win over a former champion, so this could be a big night for him.

The event is expected to be announced for Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada later this week.

Rashad Evans Vs. Dan Henderson Is ‘Likely’ To Take Place In The Future

UFC president Dana White shot down Rashad Evans’ recent request to meet Mauricio “Shogun” Rua during an appearance on UFC Tonight.

“No, that fight’s probably not going to happen. If any fight happens, it would probably be Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson,” White said.

Evans made reference to facing the fellow former UFC light heavyweight champion while appearing on FUEL TV recently. He was defeated by Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in early February.

Rua is also coming off a loss, as he was topped by Alexander Gustafsson in late 2012. Henderson, following the trend, was defeated in his previous fight, as well.

Personally, I’d prefer to see Evans vs. Rua, as I see Evans vs. Henderson being a slow, methodical match – much like Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida was.

Rashad Evans Vows To Return After UFC 156 Loss

Rashad Evans has experienced two straight losses for the first time in his career, but the former UFC light heavyweight champion isn’t planning on leaving the sport anytime soon.

Evans, who was defeated by Antonio Rogerio Nogueira earlier this month, was part of the FUEL TV weigh-in show for UFC 157 Friday, and made sure to let everyone know his future intentions.

“I’m going to be back,” Evans stated.

He went on to explain what went wrong in the Nogueira fight, citing a lack of mental focus as the main culprit.

“It was a hard fight for me, one that I lost. It was a mental fight for me. I had a great training camp, but no matter how are you are, it happens and you have to make sure you are ready to fight on all levels.”

Evans was returning to the Octagon for the first time since early in 2012 when he lost to Jon Jones in a match for the UFC 205-pound title. His only other career defeat came at the hands of Lyoto Machida.

The former Ultimate Fighter winner is now a ways down the ladder in terms of competing for the title again at light heavyweight, so I’d really like to see him make a run in middleweight. He’d need to focus a lot on the weight cut, but I feel he could eventually pose a challenge at 185 pounds.

During the post-fight show on FUEL TV made it known that he is interested in matching up with fellow ex-champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, and I have to say, that is a fight that interests me.
