Rampage Jackson: ‘I Don’t Know How Much I Ever Loved The Fight Game’

“I don’t know how much I ever loved the fight game, to be honest. Most fighters these days join fighting because they became a fan of it. When I started I wasn’t a fan of it — I’ve been a fighter my whole life. I just thought it was a blessing that God could give me something I could make money doing. When I was a kid I got tired of fighting. I didn’t want to be a fighter anymore. But I was just good at it. It was just something that was in my blood. Some people are fighters…I like it a lot less than I used to. It’s no secret, everybody knows about the falling out I had with the UFC, and it’s just unfortunate that they’re trying to blame me for doing this movie…They’ve said some things and done some things I don’t agree with — that’s not the way I do business. I’m a loyal person so I take care of people who take care of me, but people who don’t take care of me, I don’t take care of them. So I’m done with the UFC. They can’t ask me for anymore favors. Nothing. I just want to finish my contract and get out of there, do my own thing. Dana lied to me. He told me I didn’t have to fight Rashad, I could fight Machida. I did the show and then after that he told me I had to fight Rashad.”

—Rampage Jackson in an interview with Fighter’s Only, transcript via Fanhouse, saying he’s done with the UFC when his contract is up

If you’ve been following Rampage Jackson’s UFC career, especially in the last year or so, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s really not anything he hasn’t said in different words already, but it is rather odd to hear him say he thought he could fight Machida after the show. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, especially when you look back to what he said when TUF 10 was announced.

Jackson said he was given a choice of who he wanted to fight and picked Evans over the title shot:

“I had my mind set to fight Evans,” said Jackson. “I was actually there coaching (at UFC 98) trying to get him to win the fight. I want Evans he got in my face (at UFC 96), right after my fight. That was the wrong time to get in my face.”

Scratching your head? Yeah, me too. Was Rampage told what to tell the media back then? Was the entire Rampage-Rashad rivalry fabricated? I don’t know, but it doesn’t sound like the beef between Rampage, Dana and the UFC is over.

Cro Cop In Must-Win Situation At UFC 110? Rampage Signs To Fight Rashad

Not that this will come as a surprise to anyone, but Kevin Iole is reporting that Mirko Cro Cop is in serious danger of being cut by the UFC if he loses tonight against Anthony Perosh. Not only is the UFC disappointed in his performances in the Octagon, but they’re apparently getting a little tired with his lack of cooperation with the media.

Filipovic fights late replacement Anthony Perosh on Saturday (Sunday in Australia) in the opener of the pay-per-view broadcast of UFC 110. “He hasn’t done great,” White said of Filipovic’s UFC bouts. “Like I said, he’s a guy I respect because of his accomplishments. But we have some in-depth conversations, he and I. I’m real interested to see how [his fight] goes.”

“When there’s a press conference, you can’t find him,” White said. “He’s like Batman. He gets lost and you just can’t find the guy. It’s like you have to send out a Bat Signal to find him. I’m in a business where I deal with lots of different personalities, lots of different egos. There’s a lot of crazy [expletive] I deal with, and I try to deal with each guy a different way.

“Brock Lesnar wanted what he got and he had to come in and prove himself. Mirko Cro Cop didn’t. Mirko Cro Cop, everybody knew what this guy accomplished and what he had done. … Mirko has made a lot of money and he lives in Croatia somewhere. He’s a different animal, he really is. He’ll always be a part of the UFC history, but he hasn’t been the guy maybe we thought he might be. It would be good to see him prove what he can do.”

While Cro Cop may be in a must-win situation tonight, chances are he’s going to win rather easily. Even though he hasn’t lived up to his potential in the Octagon, he’s won all his fights against clearly outmatched opponents since he debuted with the organization in 2007. Tonight shouldn’t be any different.

Meanwhile, Dana says that Stephan Bonnar and Wanderlei Silva will be with the promotion for life.

Moving on, Michael Rome of Bloody Elbow reported on a lawsuit between the UFC and Rampage Jackson. Here’s the gist of the dispute:

To boil the dispute down to simpler terms, the issue is Jackson’s current contract and when it ends. Jackson wants his period away from the UFC to count towards his contractual term; the UFC is arguing that since he retired they were able to properly suspend the term for that period.

Iole also reported that Rampage signed his bout agreement to face Rashad Evans at UFC 114 this weekend in Australia. It sounds like the UFC and Rampage are making amends because the lawsuit will likely be dropped now. Plus, Dana White admitted he was impressed with what he’s seen so far with the “A-Team” movie.

Jackson went ahead and did the movie, which White said “is a real movie. Watch the trailer of this thing and you’ll see, that’s a real, big-time movie. Some of these guys come to me and tell me they’re filming a movie and you see the thing and it’s like it was filmed on a little home camcorder. Rampage’s movie is not like that. It’s definitely the real thing.”

Thiago Silva Was Too ‘Tired’ To Finish Rashad Evans At UFC 108

Thiago Silva vs Rashad Evans at UFC 108

Despite decisively losing the first two round to Rashad Evans at UFC 108, Thiago Silva found himself in position to finish the fight late in the third round. Except he didn’t. He just stopped causing fans everywhere to question what he was doing. In this interview with Tatame, Silva explains what happened.

On the third round you started to provoke him and almost knocked him out. On that moment, did you think you were winning the fight?

I knew I was losing. I wasn’t that good on the energy and I tried to provoke him to see if he comes over me, but he didn’t bought it. I knew I was losing, I lost the two rounds.

When you hit him, don’t you think that you needed to keep hitting him more?

To be tired make a difference, man… I started to provoke him because he was with the low energy, getting tired… Wanting or not, he has a heavy hand, there’s some time that we don’t know what’s going on anymore… I think the energy made the difference, I was pretty tired.

While not having the cardio to go a full three rounds at this level is typically inexcusable, we might want to give Thiago a pass on this one. Earlier this week, news surfaced that Silva had suffered a back injury while training for the Evans bout. Under normal circumstances he likely would have withdrawn from the card, but considering the extraordinary number of injuries that struck UFC 108, he opted to fight through it. That is what you call taking one for the team.

UFC 108 ‘Evans vs Silva’ Fighter Payouts

MoneyThe NSAC has released the fighter payouts for UFC 108. Keep in mind, these figures represent the base contracted pay the fighter receives from the promotion. These figures do not include any additional “locker room” bonuses, pay-per-view revenue sharing, or sponsorship money, which in many cases exceeds a fighter’s base pay. These numbers also do not account for taxes, insurance, and license fees.

Dana: ‘Probably May’ For Rampage-Rashad

Rampage Jackson & Rashad Evans

With Thiago Silva officially out of the way, Rashad Evans can refocus on Rampage Jackson. Dana recently said their highly anticipated showdown would likely happen in March, however at last night’s post-fight press conference he said it’s probably going to be May.

As reported yesterday, UFC President Dana White said that the fight would “probably” happen in March. However, he has since stated that the organization is leaning towards UFC 113 in Montreal, Canada, which would take place on the first day of the month.

“We’re thinking maybe, probably May,” White said. “That’s going to be a sick card up there.”

“The fight should have happened two weeks ago,” said White. “But I’m over [the trash-talking]. I’m past it. I think Rashad is too. Now’s the time to do that fight as soon as he’s done with his movie.”

In case you forgot, the Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua rematch is expected to headline the May 1 Montreal card. If they add Rampage vs. Rashad as the co-main event, how seriously badass is UFC 113 going to be?
