Melvin Guillard: Fighters Voted Against My Return To Jackson’s MMA

Melvin Guillard believed he would be welcomed back to Jackson’s MMA in New Mexico with open arms. He felt that way so much so that he posted it on Twitter.

However, when a group of fighters voted against Guillard’s return, he was forced to find a new training home. Now, as he prepares for Mac Danzig later this year in a match that could be for a future in the UFC, “The Young Assassin” isn’t taking any heat with the leader of his old gym, Greg Jackson.

“I don’t want to get into who voted to take me back and who didn’t. I did get to talk to coach Greg personally after the fact and he told me, ‘Look, right now we have some guys against it and it’s just not a good time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come back [eventually].’ Greg left it up to the team and I understand that,’” said Guillard, in an interview with ESPN.

Charges of assault were also brought up recently concerning Guillard, who stated they stem from a 2010 incident where “a general manager and five security guards” attacked him. He added that a group of fans helped get the guards off him and he “never touched anybody.”

Guillard fell as far and fast as Dan Hardy after Hardy’s loss to Georges St-Pierre. However, with his exciting nature and knockout ability, he could get right back on track quickly.

Melvin Guillard Receives Mac Danzig For UFC On FOX 8

A pair of lightweights will compete for a much-needed victory in July, as Melvin Guillard and Mac Danzig have agreed to collide at UFC on FOX 8.

The card is set for July 27 from the KeyArena in Seattle. So far, this is the lone bout announced.

Guillard (30-12-2) is stuck in a 1-4 stretch after winning five in a row and appearing to become a top contender at 155 pounds.

Danzig (21-10-1) sports a 5-6 record inside the Octagon and is a former winner of The Ultimate Fighter.

This match should provide plenty of excitement for the prelims, as both fighters are in desperate need of a victory.

Melvin Guillard Departs From Blackzilians, Returns To Train With Greg Jackson

Melvin Guillard’s recent string of bad luck has left him pondering his future.

However, he won’t be doing that at the Blackzilians camp in Florida, as Guillard has returned to New Mexico to train with Greg Jackson.

Guillard seemed like a top prospect in the lightweight division after stringing together five straight victories from 2010-11. Since that time, though, he has gone just 1-4, including back-to-back defeats in 2012.

Returning to Jackson’s gym can only help Guillard, as the Blackzilians have not fared the greatest in recent fights inside the Octagon.

Melvin Guillard’s UFC Status Remains Unknown Following Loss To Jamie Varner

Melvin Guillard worked himself into title contention in the UFC’s ultra-competitive lightweight division with five consecutive victories from 2010-11.

However, a 1-4 slide in his last five now has Guillard possibly facing his release from the Octagon.

“You’re asking me where he is, I don’t know, as far as being cut,” said UFC president Dana White, following Guillard’s loss to Jamie Varner at UFC 155. “We’ll talk to the boys and see.”

White and UFC officials have given fighters who stand and trade a second chance, and “The Young Assassin” has always shown a willingness to step up and fight anybody. However, White has also been critical of Guillard because of his lack of aggression.

Since appearing on The Ultimate Fighter 2, Guillard has posted a record of 11-8 fighting inside the Octagon. The 29-year-old already has 45 professional fights on his resume, sporting a career record of 30-12-2 with one no-contest.

Melvin Guillard-Jamie Varner Re-Scheduled For UFC 155

Jamie Varner came down with an illness inside the locker room Saturday night, cancelling his planned bout with Melvin Guillard at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale.

Guillard found out while warming up for his fight, and at first, thought it was a bad joke being played on him.

“I was told in my locker room. I was sitting down and getting my rules meeting from my ref. Then someone in his corner accused me of greasing. I was a little riled up. Then they told me Varner was throwing up and the fight was cancelled, but I thought it was a joke,” said Guillard, on Fuel TV after the card. “I’m still warming up but then the commissioner came in I knew it was over. When Joe Silva came in I knew.”

The fight has been re-scheduled for UFC 155 at the end of the month, and Guillard said he thinks the UFC should have a back-up fighter planned just in case it happens again.

“I just hope he doesn’t back out again,” Guillard said. “I thought what he did was cowardly. I lost all respect for him. I have a level of respect for him as a person, but not as a fighter.”

Melvin Guillard Was Ready To Fight Jamie Varner

Melvin was obviously upset his fight was cancelled, but he goes on to say he wouldn’t fight Jamie at a later date, and then he says he would.

Donald Cerrone Scores Two UFC 150 Bonuses, Walks Away With An Extra $120,000

Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard fought for just over a minute Saturday night at UFC 150, but it was enough to garner Fight of the Night honors.

Guillard floored Cerrone early in the opening round, but “Cowboy” stormed back to finish off his former sparring partner with a thunderous head-kick and right-hand. Each fighter was given $60,000.

Cerrone also earned Knockout of the Night for his performance, while Dennis Bermudez was given the Submission of the Night. Both were worth $60,000.

Donald Cerrone Wants To ‘Blow Roof’ Off Pepsi Center Tonight

Donald Cerrone is expecting nothing short of a welcome home celebration when he walks to the Octagon this evening.

Cerrone, who asked for a match at UFC 150 because it will be held in Denver, was born in Colorado Springs, will face Melvin Guillard in the co-main event.

“Hopefully this is a very special night for me,” said Cerrone, during the pre-fight press conference earlier this week. “I hope (Denver will) blow the roof off the place.”

Cerrone has been involved in two Fight of the Night performances since entering the UFC last year. Add that to the five Fight of the Night bonuses he earned in the WEC and it is easy to see why he is a crowd favorite.

“You go do what you do; go out there and fight hard,” Cerrone said. “I am going to fight my ass off.”

“Cowboy” has won seven of his last eight and is 18-4 overall in his career. He was defeated by Nate Diaz late in 2011, halting a six-fight win streak.
