Spencer Fisher Decides To Retire From MMA Following Loss To Sam Stout

Spencer Fisher believes his trilogy of fights with Sam Stout are a perfect way to finish his career.

The 36-year-old Team Evolution fighter announced his retirement following a decision loss to Stout Friday night at UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida.

“Yeah, I think that was it,” said Fisher, during the post-fight show on FUEL TV. “Sam brings the best out of me. It was a good way to end the trilogy.”

Fisher has went just 1-5 in his last six appearances inside the Octagon, and finishes with a career mark of 24-9. He did not rule out a possible return to fighting, but said, “if I did come back, it would be at 145 pounds. I’m too small for 155.”

Medical Suspensions For Fighters At UFC On FX 4 Revealed

The New Jersey Athletic Commission doesn’t mess around when it comes to revealing medical suspensions, as the board has already revealed the list of suspended fighters from Friday night’s UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida event in Atlantic City.

A total of seven fighters were placed on medical suspensions, according to a report filed by MMA Junkie.

Leading the way was Sam Stout, who was given an indefinite suspension for possible facial injuries. As usual, Stout can be cleared by a physician. He also received at least a 45-day suspension for facial lacerations.

Joey Gambino (nose) and Nick Catone (facial injuries) received the indefinite suspensions, as well, while Gray Maynard, Spencer Fisher and Ross Pearson all received 45-day suspensions for facial lacerations. Gambino and Catone can be cleared early, but were handed 90- and 60-day suspensions for facial lacerations.

Luis Ramos was handed a 30-day suspension for a facial laceration.

UFC on FX 4 Preview – The Main Card

You bought your snacks yet? You already know this a marathon weekend of fights. WHAT ARE YOU DOING AT HOME ON THE COMPUTER, YOUNG MAN? Go clean your room, for God’s sake, take a shower, and when you’re done, come back and read a bunch of words about what’s going to happen at UFC on FX 4.

-Ross Pearson vs Cub Swanson

It’s tough to hate on Ross Pearson. Despite his recent hardships both in and out of the octagon, the Brit is really “The Real Deal”, and as a featherweight, he should be able to shine. Cub Swanson isn’t exactly a pushover though. With Swanson’s powerful striking, I could see him causing some serious problems for Pearson, but, he won’t. This will be a brawl, albeit, a technical one, and Pearson wins this on points.

-Brian Ebersole vs TJ Waldburger

I love Brian Ebersole. From his cartwheel kicks to his questionable body hair, and his IDGAF style of grappling, the light hearted fighter has won me over. I also am a fan of Waldburger, however, I see this looking similar to Ebersole’s fight against Dennis Hallman. Look for Ebersole to survive a few close calls, and finish Waldburger in the second with strikes.

-Spencer Fisher vs Sam Stout

These two men have had two previous meetings. Both have ended via decision, and each man has taken home one victory. I think this could very well be an exciting and interesting fight, but Sam Stout is winning this. Stout has arguably hit a high point in his career, and Fisher is very much on the decline. Stout has Fisher’s number, and he’s stopping his foe.

-Clay Guida vs Gray Maynard

At last, the main event. These two need no introduction, so I will merely break down the fight. Clay Guida can go for 25 minutes no problem, Gray fades as the fight progresses. One constantly puts on pressure, the other can’t seem to finish his opponents, no matter how hard he hits them. I expect a rapid pace, but in the end, Maynard’s superior wrestling acumen and improved striking saves his title hopes, as he handily bests Guida on the scorecards.

The main card goes down tomorrow night at 9pm ET. Let me know what you think, and most of all, enjoy the fights.

Observations from My Couch: UFC 134 ‘Silva the Untouchable’

A few observations about UFC 134: ‘Silva vs. Okami’:

-It would not surprise me in the least if years down the line we learn that Rousimar Palhares is friends with a six-foot tall anthropomorphic rabbit who tells him what to do and only he can see him.  Or so he thinks.

-Apparently Thiago Tavares didn’t get the memo that standing and trading with Spencer Fisher for three rounds automatically gets you a “Fight of the Night” bonus.

-Luiz Cane: so much potential, so much fail.

-I admit that going into the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira/Brendan Schaub bout I thought “Big Nog” was going to get killed.  But damn was I pleasantly surprised when the legend made the young upstart kiss the canvas.

-Ross Pearson may have lost, but the technique he displayed and his ability to stick to his game plan – especially when getting blasted – impressed me quite a bit.  I actually can’t wait to see him fight again.

-Forrest Griffin didn’t phone in that performance so much as he tapped it out in Morse code over an Old West telegraph.  Yes, his wife is due to have his kid soon, but geez, at least act like you care about fighting in the UFC.

-Anderson Silva didn’t look great as much as Yushin Okami looked like a clown with no plan of attack whatsoever.  No, wait, I take that back.  Silva did look great.  His opponent just completely spaced out.

Thursday News Round-Up:

Rundown of today’s news stories…

Mirko Cro Cop is going for it one last time. Surprisingly enough it looks like he’ll be doing it in The UFC after all. There’s no word on his opponent as of now, but here’s the full story. Another interesting note, Dana is ok with Mirko’s choice even though he said something along the lines of ‘Mirko is done.’ following the loss to Brendan Schaub.

Apparently, The UFC is bracing itself for less than stellar numbers leading into UFC 130, but who can really blame them after losing the shows intended and highly anticipated rematch between lightweight king Frank Edgar and deserving contender Gray Maynard?

5 fights are now official for UFC 134: Rio. Paulo Thiago will be taking on other welterweight up-and-comer David Mitchell. Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. takes on Ross Pearson, and Thiago Tavares will fight Spencer Fisher. Luiz Cane looks to beat Stanislav Nedkov in his UFC debut. The main event is still as expected to be Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Firas Zahabi has now joined in the talks about GSP and Nick Diaz potentially fighting next. Check out the full interview here. In short, Firas basically says he has no inside information, but he knows that Georges would likely take the fight should it become available.

Check back later for more updates.
