Hughes: Lawler’s Gameplan Was To Take Manhoef Down

One of the big questions going into the Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef fight was whether Lawler would attempt to take Manhoef down. It was certainly the safest and easiest path to victory for Lawler, but fighters can be stubborn and like to prove they can beat one another at their own game. Lawler never did shoot it in on Manhoef, but as Matt Hughes tells Cagewriter’s Steve Cofield that doesn’t mean it wasn’t part of the plan. Manhoef just never gave him any good openings. Hughes explains on his blog.

Strikeforce ‘Miami’: Robbie Lawler vs Melvin Manhoef Official, KJ Noons Off Card (Update)

Melvin ManhoefTwo of Strikeforce’s heaviest hitters are expected to throw down on Jan. 30 in Sunrise, Florida. According to Middle Easy and Five Oz., Melvin Manhoef and Robbie Lawler will likely meet at Strikeforce “Miami.”

FiveOuncesofPain.com has recently been able to comfirm through sources close to the situation that a middleweight slugfest between Melvin Manhoef and Robbie Lawler is currently on the table, and is expected to take place on the “Strikeforce: Miami” card set for January 30 from Miami, Florida.

While nothing has been signed as of this writing, FiveOuncesofPain.com was able to confirm that the bout has been offered, and is expected to be signed by at least one of the fighters shortly.

MMA Junkie also confirmed the fight’s possibility with Lawler’s manager, Monte Cox, but says they’ve yet to receive a bout agreement.

It will be a hell of a fight if it happens. Both fighters have infinite knockout power, yet take vastly different approaches. As he’s matured Lawler has become more methodical opting to pick his opponent apart before going in for the kill whereas Manhoef looks to destroy his opponent the moment the opening bell rings. In other words, Lawler might want to get to the point a little quicker than normal.

In other Strikeforce “Miami” news, KJ Noons was set to return against Billy Evangelista, however it appears Evangelista suffered an injury during training and was forced to withdraw. If another lightweight on the card goes down, Noons may step in as a replacement, otherwise he’ll be shifted to Strikeforce’s March or April card.

Update: Strikeforce has officially announced Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef for Strikeforce “Miami.”

Strikeforce Fails To Find Opponent For Lawler, May Have Found One For Lashley

Robbie Lawler

Even with all roster additions Strikeforce has made in recent months, they were still unable to secure a replacement opponent for Robbie Lawler on Saturday’s Strikeforce “Evolution” card.

Robbie Lawler will not be competing this Saturday night after all. The middleweight fighter was supposed to face Trevor Prangley on the undercard of Showtime’s Strikeforce: Evolution card, but after Prangley was forced to withdraw earlier this week due to an injury suffered during training, the organization was left without an opponent.

Strikeforce tried to find an opponent for Lawler, but FanHouse has learned that they have decided to keep him off the card. The organization is hoping to reschedule him for the upcoming Jan. 30 event in Sunrise, Fla.

Sherdog says Strikeforce tried getting Kala Hose to step in but he has the flu and couldn’t make it. I wonder if they thought to ask Hector Lombard. He’s looking for a big fight in Strikeforce.

In other Strikeforce news, Bobby Lashley may have an opponent for Strikeforce’s Miami card on Jan. 30. According to MMA Worldwide, Lashley has agreed to fight Shane Del Rosario, though it has not yet been confirmed by the promotion.
