Diego Sanchez Moving Back To Welterweight?

Diego Sanchez

Only days after Diego Sanchez’s devastating loss to BJ Penn, Diego was already talking about a rematch. However, it seems that the reality of the situation is finally setting in, because Diego is now hinting at a move back to the welterweight division.

Heavy in the sense of what weight class he will next compete in. The New Mexico native on Sunday night left a somewhat cryptic message via his Facebook page stating “going back up to 170.”

When contacted by MMAWeekly.com, Jeff Clark, Sanchez’s manager, indicated that there has been no official decision made at this time about what weight class he will compete in next.

It’s definitely a tough decision Diego has to make. On one hand, Diego made the move to lightweight because he couldn’t make it to the top in the welterweight division, but on the other, he has to know he is a long ways off from another title shot at 155 lbs. as long as BJ Penn is the champion. Still, barring any monumental upsets, it’s pretty much inevitable that Penn is going to give 170 lbs. another shot and probably vacate his lightweight title when he does. Since Diego couldn’t reach his goal at welterweight, maybe he should just wait out Penn’s lightweight title reign and make another run when he leaves.

Diego Sanchez’s Forehead Gash Already 90% Healed

Diego Sanchez Cut Healed

BJ Penn opened up a canyon on Diego Sanchez’s forehead 11 short days ago. You would think it would take awhile to heal, but thanks to modern medicine and a plastic surgeon, the gash is already 90% healed.

I just want to take the time to thank god for giving me a great plastic surgeon and healing me so fast I’m 90% healed with no scar. wow god is great and also thanks to Dave sales my chiro who did cold laser on the scars and hooked me up with metagenics vitamin e for the scars . Thank you Jesus!

Penn’s Destruction Of Sanchez Measured In Numbers

BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez Fightmetric report

Yes, you’re reading that correctly. BJ Penn landed 150 total strikes to Diego Sanchez’s 8 according to the Fightmetric report. In fact, Penn landed more strikes on himself in his post-fight celebration than Sanchez did the entire fight. The percentage of strikes landed was equally disproportionate — BJ’s 70% to Diego’s 7%. What’s even crazier is Diego was 0-27 in takedown attempts. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

It was the type of fight that would mentally break most fighters in the early rounds, so if nothing else, you gotta give Diego credit for hanging in there and fighting till the very end.

Update: Here’s another little fun fact courtesy of FightMetric.

Question: When was the last time that BJ Penn got taken down while fighting at 155 pounds?

Answer: You have to go back more than six years to Penn’s fight against Takanori Gomi. Lightweight opponents are 0 for their last 39 takedown attempts against BJ.

UFC 107 ‘Penn vs Sanchez’ Weigh-In Results, Pics & Video

Video of the UFC 107 weigh-ins via Fanhouse.

The UFC 107 weigh-ins took place this afternoon at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee.

What a bizarre weigh-in event. A handful of fighters had to get completely naked to make weight. Edgar Garcia missed it by 2lbs. Then Cheick Kongo completely turns his back to Frank Mir during their staredown. He’s obviously still very pissed at Mir. Then Diego Sanchez comes out chanting YES!, the crowd starts chanting along with him, and then he misses weight by a pound. If it keeps up we’re going to be in for a crazy one tomorrow night.

Update: Diego weighed in at 154.5 on his second try sans shorts.

Update 2: Gouveia-Belcher is a 195lbs catchweight bout per Gouveia’s request earlier today.

Update 3: Edgar Garcia shed the 2 lbs. and hit 171 on his second attempt.

The weigh-in results:

  • B.J. Penn (155) vs. Diego Sanchez (154.5)
  • Frank Mir (264.5) vs. Cheick Kongo (239)

  • Kenny Florian (156) vs. Clay Guida (156)
