EliteXC On CBS ‘Unfinished Business’ Results & Wrap-Up

EliteXC: Unfinished Business PosterEliteXC “Unfinished Business” took place earlier this evening at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, California. A portion of the card aired on Showtime. The main card was broadcast live on CBS. This event was the second mixed martial arts event to air on major network television.

Three titles were on the line tonight.

Antonio Silva looked to stake his claim as the EliteXC Heavyweight Champion in a match against former UFC fighter Justin Eilers.

Jake Shields finally got his opportunity to compete for a championship belt as he faced off the always dangerous Nick Thompson.

In a rematch from EliteXC’s network television debut, Robbie Lawler looked to defend his middleweight crown against Scott Smith. The first fight ended in controversy when Lawler inadvertently poked Smith in the eye causing the doctors to stop the fight.

Nick Diaz, Rafael Feijao, Shayna Baszler, Wilson Reis and Cris Cyborg were also in action.

Results after the jump.

Much of the MMA community, including myself, believed a July 26 EliteXC/CBS bout between Nick Diaz and KJ Noons was all but officially announced a few days ago. That quickly changed when a report came out that Diaz would not be fighting Noons on July 26, shortly followed by another report that Diaz would be facing Thomas Denny at “Unfinished Business” instead.

Nick Diaz Will Fight Thomas Denny At July 26 CBS ‘Unfinished Business’ Event

Thomas DennyEarlier today we passed along news that Nick Diaz and KJ Noons would not be settling their grudge on EliteXC’s “Unfinished Business” fight card that’s scheduled to air on CBS on July 26. That is in fact the case, as Sherdog.com reports, Nick Diaz will still fight on the card, except his opponent will be Thomas Denny, not KJ Noons.

Thomas Denny (Pictures) has no problems walking into the lion’s den.

The former King of the Cage champion has agreed to face resident troublemaker Nick Diaz (Pictures) in his hometown of Stockton, Calif. on EliteXC’s second CBS-televised card at the Stockton Arena on July 26. Contracts are expected to be inked Tuesday.

Denny doesn’t pose much of a threat to Diaz, so it only makes sense that they are using this fight to promote the rematch between Diaz and Noons to the national audience for perhaps their October CBS card. It’s been said that CBS will be judging the ratings in October more heavily than they will on this upcoming July 26 event, so it makes good sense business to use Diaz in this fashion, provided he doesn’t lose.
