SPIKE TV’S RE-BROADCAST OF UFC 84 DRAWS MORE YOUNG MEN THAN A LIVE PRO ELITEXC CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT ON CBS

Need proof the UFC is the preeminent mixed martial arts brand in the world? On Saturday, July 26, more men 18-34 watched a repeat…a repeat…of a UFC event on Spike TV than a LIVE telecast of a Pro EliteXC championship card on CBS. Despite being available in over 17 million more homes, Spike TV drew 27% more Men 18-34 for a re-broadcast of “UFC 84: Penn vs. Sherk” from (9:00-12:00am ET/PT) than CBS’s live show (9:00-11:00pm). Spike TV’s telecast tallied 433,000 Men 18-34 to CBS’s 341,000.

Overall, “UFC 84: Penn vs. Sherk” drew higher ratings than Pro EliteXC in Men 18-49 (1.5 to 1.3) and Men 18-34 (1.5 and 1.0).

Ultimate Fight Night 14 ‘Silva vs Irvin’ Averages 3.1 Million Viewers (Update)

UFC Ultimate Fight Night Silva vs Irvin PosterSpike TV has released the ratings for Ultimate Fight Night 14 ‘Silva vs Irvin,’ and they are impressive.

“The Ultimate Fighting Championship proved yet again to be the ratings champion with the hard-to-reach demographic of young men. Spike TV’s telecast of a live ‘UFC Fight Night’ on Saturday, July 19 (9:00pm-12:00am ET) featuring the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Anderson Silva, out-delivered every other channel (broadcast and cable) with Men 18-34 (903,000), Men 18-49 (1,550,000), Men 25-34 (622,000), and Persons 18-34 (1,326,000).* The telecast peaked at 11:30pm for the Silva vs. James Irvin bout drawing 3.8 million viewers and a staggering 4.9 rating for Men 25-34 and a 4.1 rating in Men 18-34.

The UFC fight card also drew more viewers than FOX’s coverage of MLB (3,072,000) earlier in the day and nearly tripled its reach of Men 18-34 (369,000) and doubled the Men 18-49 (879,000).

UFC Counter-Programming EliteXC/CBS ‘Unfinished Business’ With UFC 84 On Spike TV July 26

You knew it was coming.

We mentioned last week that UFC president Dana White was planning a special to counter-program EliteXC’s second outing on CBS scheduled for July 26. Well, it looks like that special will be UFC 84, arguably the best UFC event thus far in 2008. Spike TV, of course, will have the honors of broadcasting the event.

This will mark the third time the UFC has come up with programming to counter the competition’s live events. On May 31, during EliteXC’s CBS debut, Spike TV ran a special night of programming dedicated to Chuck Liddell, which drew between 1.2 and 1.6 million viewers away from EliteXC over the course of the night. Despite the strong effort, the UFC didn’t spoil EliteXC’s party, as the ‘Primetime’ event drew record ratings for a mixed martial arts event in North America.

UFC 89 To Air Free On Spike TV; UFC 90 A Week Later?

UFC 89 PosterAccording to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, the UFC will be giving us UFC 89 “Leben vs Bisping” free on Spike TV. The card, as its titled, will be headlined by a middleweight clash that was originally scheduled for UFC 85 between contenders Chris Leben and Michael Bisping. The event will take place at the NIA in Birmingham, England on October 18. It was also recently reported that a welterweight matchup between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves is scheduled for the event. It seems plausible that this fight could determine the next number one contender in the welterweight division considering Alves all but had the spot locked up if he beat Matt Hughes until he came in four pounds heavy.

So why is the UFC giving us this event for free? Well, it appears the UFC is planning to run a major pay-per-view event, likely UFC 90, right on its heels on October 25. Meltzer didn’t have any further details, although there have been rumors of the UFC wanting Wanderlei Silva to fight in October.

Keep in mind that EliteXC is planning its third CBS card for October and Affliction is looking around November 1 as a possible date for their second event. EliteXC likely won’t go with October 18 or 25, so we may end up having four consecutive weekends of major MMA events!

The latest UFC 89 “Leben vs Bisping” fight card and event info can be found in our fight cards section.

Is The UFC Feeling Threatened…

…by EliteXC’s primetime, network television debut on CBS? It looks like it. In an obvious attempt to divert viewers away from EliteXC: Primetime, the UFC has dedicated a two-hour block of special programming on Spike TV featuring its most popular fighter, Chuck Liddell, to run at the same time as the event on CBS.

Here’s the press release:

On Saturday, May 31, the best mixed martial arts programming on television will be on Spike TV, as the network presents a special night dedicated to UFC® superstar Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. The homage to Liddell will feature two Spike TV premiere events not to be missed by true UFC fans.

At 9:00pm ET/PT, Spike presents the world television premiere of “Ultimate Iceman: Chuck Liddell,” an hour-long documentary which chronicles the life of one of the sport’s true titans, in and out of the Octagon™.
