Paulo Filho Released From Zuffa Contract

Paulo FilhoNo surprises here. Following an abysmal performance against Chael Sonnen at WEC 36, Paulo Filho has been released from his Zuffa contract. Dave Meltzer was the first to report the possibility in this week’s edition on The Wrestling Observer.

Cage Potato, however, was able to confirm the news with Filho’s manager, Ed Soares, earlier today.

“It’s true. We’ve received paperwork that they’re releasing him from his contract. The WEC’s been great throughout everything, but it’s understandable. He’s had a rough year. We have faith that he’ll be back. I still believe he’s one of the best middleweights in the world.”

I’m not going to lie, when I was watching his last fight, I got pretty fired about what I was watching unfold, or better yet not unfold, in front of my eyes. After cooling off though and taking his personal problems into consideration, I’ve been a little more understanding. I hope Filho takes this time to deal with whatever problems he has and worries about fighting again after that. I’m sure if Filho overcomes his demons and comes back better than ever, Zuffa will likely take him back with open arms. After all, he wasn’t widely regarded as the second best middleweight in the world for nothing.

Good question, but it appears the answer has been made public.

It turns out that wasn’t the only big news the UFC President has about the WEC though. White revealed to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports that they are planning on holding their first WEC pay-per-view event next year, and despite the roster reductions, they still plan to hold as many events as this year, if not more.

Zuffa Wins Latest Battle In Couture Legal Case

If you’re good enough and you get the call, it’s a no-brainer, right?

Randy Couture Wins Latest Court Battle With Zuffa

Randy Couture ImageIt’s not over yet, but Randy Couture’s chances of winning a favorable decision on the status of his promotional (fight) contract with Zuffa just got better. With Mark Cuban’s help and an apparent pending contract waiting in the wings, HDNet was able to file suit seeking a declaratory judgment on Couture’s contract on February 13 in Texas, where Couture stands a much better chance of winning than in Nevada, a state where the Fertittas and the UFC (Zuffa) have home-field advantage.

Declaratory Judgment On Randy Couture’s UFC Contract Likely To Come By End Of Summer

Randy Couture ImageRandy Couture thought a judgment on the status of his contract would be made quickly, but it looks like he may have to wait until the end of the summer for the verdict. HDNet jumped to Randy’s legal side shortly after he resigned from the UFC, and filed a lawsuit against Zuffa, parent company of the UFC, to obtain a declaratory judgment on when Randy would be free of his contract. HDNet reportedly has a contract with Randy that will take effect once Randy is free of his obligations to the UFC.
