No surprises here. Following an abysmal performance against Chael Sonnen at WEC 36, Paulo Filho has been released from his Zuffa contract. Dave Meltzer was the first to report the possibility in this week’s edition on The Wrestling Observer.
Cage Potato, however, was able to confirm the news with Filho’s manager, Ed Soares, earlier today.
“It’s true. We’ve received paperwork that they’re releasing him from his contract. The WEC’s been great throughout everything, but it’s understandable. He’s had a rough year. We have faith that he’ll be back. I still believe he’s one of the best middleweights in the world.”
I’m not going to lie, when I was watching his last fight, I got pretty fired about what I was watching unfold, or better yet not unfold, in front of my eyes. After cooling off though and taking his personal problems into consideration, I’ve been a little more understanding. I hope Filho takes this time to deal with whatever problems he has and worries about fighting again after that. I’m sure if Filho overcomes his demons and comes back better than ever, Zuffa will likely take him back with open arms. After all, he wasn’t widely regarded as the second best middleweight in the world for nothing.

There’s been a lot of talk recently about Zuffa folding some of the heavier weight classes from the WEC into the UFC. Dana White confirmed those rumors, and stated the WEC light heavyweight and middleweight divisions would merge with the UFC’s.
Randy Couture didn’t receive good news Friday in reference to his legal battle with Zuffa. Yesterday,
In the past year, two of the UFC’s biggest stars—Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz—have publicly ripped the UFC for the large gap between the UFC’s revenues and fighter pay. There’s been rumblings that many of the UFC’s contracted fighters feel the same way, but aren’t in the same position as Couture and Ortiz to do anything about it. Well, no matter which of those categories Roger Huerta falls into, he’s no longer one of the fighters keeping quiet about it.
Nearly every young athlete dreams of becoming a professional athlete and competing on his/her sport’s biggest stage. Baseball players want to be in the MLB, football players in the NFL, and basketball players in the NBA. Up-and-coming mixed martial artists are no exception, and for the past few years at least, the stage they dreamed of was an eight-sided cage owned by the UFC. If you’re good enough and you get the call, it’s a no-brainer, right?

It’s not over yet, but Randy Couture’s chances of winning a favorable decision on the status of his promotional (fight) contract with Zuffa just got better. With Mark Cuban’s help and an apparent pending contract waiting in the wings, HDNet was able to file suit seeking a declaratory judgment on Couture’s contract on February 13 in Texas, where Couture stands a much better chance of winning than in Nevada, a state where the Fertittas and the UFC (Zuffa) have home-field advantage.
