Big John McCarthy is back. According to Sherdog.com, on Nov. 21 at Strikeforce “Destruction,” McCarthy will return to the profession that made him famous for the first time in 11 months.
Big John had this to say about his return.
“I missed doing it. Sometimes when you walk away from something and you think it’s time, once you’re away you realize what you’re missing –- it’s kind of like why guys come back to fighting. It’s what I like doing. It’s what I was meant to do.”
Since the Strikeforce card will take place in California, McCarthy will be working for the CSAC for this particular event. Considering previous reports that the NSAC and the UFC have issues with Big John, it still appears unclear when we’ll hear “Let’s get it on!” from the Octagon in Vegas again, but this is certainly a good start. Mixed martial arts clearly needs all the competent referees it can get, and no one is better than McCarthy.
Welcome back, Big John.
Big John McCarthy is widely regarded as the best referee in the history of mixed martial arts. He became an UFC icon even though he technically worked for the athletic commissions. In fact, amongst fans he’s arguably more popular than the fighters with the exception of only the biggest stars. Because of that, when Big John decided to leave reffing to pursue a career in broadcasting with The Fight Network, fans immediately started to the question, “When are you going to ref again?”

Apparently, ProElite doesn’t have the only executives in the fight business that are running their company into the ground. In this thread on the UG, a former employee of The Fight Network talks fairly openly about how the new ownership has adversely affected the company’s health. Of course, you always have to be a little leery when a former employee starts airing out the dirty laundry, however, it appears his claims may be substantiated because Big John McCarthy has just written his farewell post on TFN blog.
Well this is my farewell from the Fight Network. While I will not miss what has happened or transpired at the company, I am really going to miss some very special people that I have come to know and respect in my short time with them.
To all of the higher ups that have taken over the Fight Network over the last year I only have this to say………….. Shame on you………………
Big John spends most of the post thanking a few of his former colleagues—Mike Garrow, Mauro Ranallo, John Pollack—and the fans, but he definitely alludes to the new executive management running the company into the ground.
It never ceases to amaze me how certain people who have no idea what they’re doing get into such high positions of power. As Big John said, it’s a shame.
By the way, JT McCarthy in the UG thread is not the same person as Big John.
In case you missed it, Dana White told Dave Meltzer this past weekend that not only will the UFC not follow the weight class changes outlined in the latest revision to the unified rules, but also that the man leading the charge, former UFC referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy, is his new enemy. It didn’t take long for ‘Big’ John to catch wind of White’s comments and had a few of his own during today’s Fight Network Radio show. McCarthy also went on to explain the reasoning behind the decision to change the weight classes.

Affliction announced earlier today that Jay Glazer, Frank Trigg and ‘Big’ John McCarthy will be calling the action at the organization’s debut MMA event.
“Affliction Banned,” the greatest MMA show of all-time, will feature an all-star broadcast team for its July 19th pay-per-view event, featuring the WAMMA heavyweight championship fight between the most lethal MMA heavyweight of all-time, Russian M1 superstar legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (27-1), and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia (24-4), live from Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
The most surprising modification to the unified rules of mixed martial arts that was made by the ABC this past week were the major changes to the weight classes. The change would undoubtedly have a huge impact on the UFC, which takes pride in following the unified rules. So how does Dana White and Co. feel about the ABC’s weight class revisions?

A name that became synonymous with the UFC, “Big” John McCarthy, has been tapped as one of the on-air broadcasters for Affliction “Banned.” Mauro Ranallo will call the action alongside him.
Mr. Burger also announced that The Fight Network’s on-air MMA experts Mauro Ranallo and legendary MMA pioneer and Fight Network analyst “Big” John McCarthy will be calling the action for this worldwide event.
