UFC Working To Help Save Amateur Wrestling

The UFC isn’t just planning to stand by and let amateur wrestling go under, as the promotion is working with several outlets to help save the sport.

It was made known earlier this year that wrestling was in the process of being dropped from the Summer Olympics beginning in 2020, and the out-pouring of support to save the sport quickly started up.

During a conference call earlier this week, UFC president Dana White made it known that he is working behind the scenes to help keep wrestling alive from the high school ranks on up.

“I’ve met with a lot of top guys in wrestling. I met with them last (week) and the UFC is joining the fight to help save Olympic wrestling. Not just Olympic wrestling. Colleges are dropping (the sport); high schools have been dropping wrestling for a long time. I have personally funded tons of wrestling programs, and the UFC has funded tons of wrestling programs for high school kids.”

White also directed some words towards Bellator MMA and Viacom, saying they could lend a hand in the support process, too.

Several of the top fighters in the world competed in wrestling, including Olympians like Daniel Cormier, Sara McMann and Dan Henderson. Many others were high school or college standouts.

Dana White On Jordan Mein, FOX Sports 1 Debut Card

UFC president Dana White had high remarks for Jordan Mein, who will make his second Octagon appearance later this month at UFC on FOX 7.

Mein will replace Dan Hardy and face Matt Brown on the main card, which will air on FOX.

“I was very impressed with his performance,” said White, during a recent conference call. “We are using him because we were very blown away by his last fight. It is going to be a great fight (with Brown).”

White was also asked about the August UFC on FOX Sports 1 debut, which takes place from Boston. He didn’t have any fight announcements to make, but promised a stacked lineup.

“We still have time,” he said. “We are going to be doing a huge fight in Boston. That same day, the Red Sox and the Yankees are playing and we are going to be doing some really cool stuff. It will be a huge event, a great card; but nothing has come together yet.”

Matt Mitrione Had ‘No Point’ To Interview Regarding Fallon Fox, Says Dana White

UFC president Dana White had some stern words for Matt Mitrione during a conference call Tuesday.

Many wondered if the UFC boss would even be asked about the incident involving Mitrione and transgender fighter Fallon Fox – and if he was, would he answer.

Well, White did, as only he can.

First of all, he didn’t need to be doing an interview. I am going to talk to these guys. The only time these guys need to be doing interviews is leading up to fights.

What was the point of the interview? It just caused a bunch of problems for us and a bunch of problems for him. What was the point of the interview? What was the upside? None.

Mitrione had some choice words for Fox, who has fended off the critics since she became noteworthy due to her change from a man to a woman.

For now, Mitrione is suspended and awaiting word on his next foe.

Dana White Less-Than-Impressed With Swedish MMA Federation

To say UFC president Dana White was unhappy with the Swedish MMA Federation this past week would be an understatement.

The SMMAF pulled Alexander Gustafsson from a planned main event, forcing UFC officials to pair Ilir Latifi with Gegard Mousasi in the main event Saturday night from Stockholm.

White, during the post-fight show on FUEL TV, made sure to let his feelings be known.

“The commission did a horrible job with this fight,” White said, during the post-fight show on FUEL TV. “I don’t want to smash the commission, but they’re very inexperienced. This isn’t Las Vegas or New Jersey or California where lots of fights happen.”

This was the second appearance in Sweden in the past few years, and White added that “They did a great job the first time we came here.” He said that “hopefully, they’ll get back on the wagon.”

Other UFC officials have stated plans to return in the next 12-to-18 months, but that could change after what happened over the past week.

Dana White: Ilir Latifi Will Face Gegard Mousasi Saturday

The main event of FUEL TV’s Sweden card is set, as Ilir Latifi will face Gegard Mousasi.

Latifi (7-2) will be taking the place of Alexander Gustafsson in the bout. He is a training partner of “The Mauler’s,” who was forced out of the fight with a cut suffered last week.

The decision to find a replacement for Gustafsson was likely tied into finding someone who was already in Sweden.

So, the question is, will you tune in just to see how bad Mousasi destroys this guy?
