Shinya Aoki Sends Message To Dana White; Wants BJ Penn

Assuming this translation is accurate, Shinya Aoki sends quite the message to Dana White and the UFC in the video above. I love Japanese MMA, but Aoki might want to check out these ratings, and realize Japan is no longer the mecca of mixed martial arts.

Aoki also proclaimed following his victory over Eddie Alvarez that he wants to fight BJ Penn. Don’t get your hopes up though, because he’s not willing to come to the UFC to do it.

“Personally, the most decisive fight in the world, the culmination, the pinnacle for me is B.J. Penn. Please do not misunderstand — I really need this to be clearly expressed in the media: Shinya Aoki will not go to the UFC. I just want to fight B.J. Penn. This is my selfish wish. I know that everyone says they want Penn, but I think I’m the number one Japanese fighter to be saying this.”

DREAM’s 2009 Plans (Update)

DREAM Logo

Despite all the speculation of DREAM folding after it held it’s last solo event of 2008 back in September, it appears FEG is already laying out their plans for DREAM in 2009.

Nightmare of Battle has the scoop:

  • As expected there will be a Featherweight GP and a Welterweight GP in 2009. It is not clear yet if the Welterweight GP will be 8 or 16-man, but it will most likely revolve around Shinya Aoki and Hayato “Mach” Sakurai.
  • The first DREAM event of 2009 will be held in early March. The Featherweight GP might start at this event.
  • There will be around the same number of DREAM events in 2009 as in 2008
  • Champions in the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight divisions are planned to be crowned in 2009.

I happen to love DREAM and Japanese MMA, so that sounds good to me.

What really will be intriguing though is how DREAM and Sengoku competes with the UFC should they invade Japan in 2009.

Quick Update: Could Dynamite’s lackluster ratings affect the aforementioned plans?

The ratings for Dynamite!! are in and they are not very good.

Dynamite!! Part 1 (19:00-21:00) 11.8%
Dynamite!! Part 2 (21:00-23:00) 12.9%
Dynamite!! Part 3 (23:00-23:24) 8.4%

Before the event Tanigawa said they were aiming for 15% and over. It’s even worse than last year and much worse than the years before that. I guess this shows how important fighters such as KID and Masato are.

How And When To Watch Fields Dynamite!! 2008…? (Update - Mystery Solved)

Dynamite!! Press Conference

The short answer is I don’t know, and from what I can tell, neither does anyone else.

Fightlinker has a post with all the details on why this is a giant clusterfuck, possible times to watch, etc.

By now you might have heard that K1 fucked up hardcore in sorting out a way for people to watch their event. The show starts at 3pm in Japan (11pm EST), but isn’t being broadcast anywhere until 7pm (3AM EST) in condensed format. Those who want to watch the show in it’s full format need access to SkyPerfectTV, which will air the event in an 8 hour format at midnight (8AM EST). Of course, none of this is any good for you if you don’t live in Japan or have access to some impressive satelite service. HDNet isn’t covering the event, and the only official source for people wanting to stream this event over the net has bowed out due to ’satellite issues’.

Basically, there’s two options, and neither are necessarily the right way to do it, but FEG isn’t giving us much of a choice. You do want us to watch the event, right Japan? Anyways, it looks like on the other side of the world the event will be broadcast tomorrow morning at 3AM ET (condensed) and 8AM ET (full) (neither live), so you can try and find a stream somewhere on the internet at those times. Otherwise, the only other option will be to find flash videos of the individual fights. I haven’t decided if I’m going to post them here or not yet, but at the very least, I’ll reconfigure the news ticker on the right sidebar of our homepage to display links to the videos (if available).

As for our coverage, I’m going to avoid any and all MMA news sites until I’ve seen all the fights so I don’t get spoiled. Sorry, but I’m a fan too. Basically, that means there won’t be any other posts tomorrow until I’ve finished watching Dynamite!!. Don’t be afraid to stop by at any time though. I promise there will NOT be any spoilers on our homepage tomorrow once I’ve seen it, including the news ticker (I’ll restore to current form on Thursday), but I will post results, thoughts, and possibly the fights on the other side of the jump, much like I do for all the UFC events.

If anyone has any other ideas, suggestions, or info, please drop us a line in the comments below.

Enjoy the fights, in whatever ridiculous way you have to watch them in!

Update: Fightlinker found a solution for those willing to watch at 5AM ET.

Fields Dynamite!! Weigh-In Results, No Live US Broadcast, LeBanner Out, Manhoef In

Hong Man Choi & Cro Cop at Dynamite!! Press Conference

The biggest Japanese combat sports event of the year—Fields Dynamite!! 2008—is inching closer to kicking off in Japan. Earlier today (or yesterday?), the participants in the K-1/DREAM mixed event weighed in and a pre-fight press conference was held.

The biggest news coming out the press conference is Jerome LeBanner has come down with the flu and has withdrawn from his DREAM rules bout against hardcore fan favorite Mark Hunt. No need to be disappointed though, since explosive striker Melvin Manhoef has stepped in to replace him. Hunt will have a huge weight advantage in the fight, however, Manhoef is scary fast on his feet, so it should be an entertaining fight if nothing else.

The real disappointing news is that the Event Magic.tv internet pay-per-view deal has fallen through, meaning there will be no way (unless you’re resourceful) to watch the event live in the US.

Andy Olegun missed weight (.88lbs), however it sounded like he would be weighing in again. Not sure what happened with Cro Cop, Bob Sapp and Badr Hari as there was no results listed for them. I’ll update the list if their results come available.

Cro Cop Arrives In Japan, UFC Return In 2009?

Mirko Cro Cop arrived in Japan today for his fight against Hong Man Choi at Fields Dynamite!! on NYE. In the video above, Cro Cop made a few comments about his opponent and his strategy, and apparently, he doesn’t plan on using his biggest strength—striking. As Fightlinker pointed out, is that really the best gameplan when that’s how everybody else has been beating Choi lately? He’s big and powerful sure, but he’s also very slow. If Mirko wants to fight Choi on the ground, I hope he has a good plan to put Choi on his back because he certainly doesn’t want to end up underneath him. Cro Cop doesn’t exactly have Fedor’s armbar skills after all.

Official: Shinya Aoki vs Eddie Alvarez For WAMMA Lightweight Championship

Shinya Aoki vs Eddie Alvarez

It’s official, Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez will compete at Fields Dynamite!! 2008 on NYE for the WAMMA Lightweight Championship.

WAMMA will still label the winner the “undisputed” lightweight champion of mixed martial arts. Of course, with BJ Penn still being the consensus number one ranked lightweight in the world, it’s rather difficult to take their claim seriously, as I’ve addressed before. However, WAMMA has recognized that argument and addressed it in the press release below. Basically, they are justifying the match based on Penn’s inactivity at lightweight, and should he lose to GSP and drop back down to 155lbs to defend his UFC lightweight title, WAMMA plans to “approach the UFC with the hope of facilitating a fight between Penn and the WAMMA lightweight champion,” which would be awesome, but will never happen.

WAMMA TO RECOGNIZE WINNER OF NEW YEAR’S EVE MATCH BETWEEN EDDIE ALVAREZ AND SHINYA AOKI AS FIRST-EVER WAMMA LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION

After reports had circulated for several weeks that a highly-anticipated lightweight attraction set for New Year’s Eve between Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki would decide the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts’ (WAMMA) first-ever undisputed lightweight champion, WAMMA officials announced Monday that it will recognize the winner of the bout as its first-ever lightweight champion.
