Bjorn Rebney Says Bellator Will Look Into Strikeforce Fighters On ‘Case-By-Case Basis’

Bellator isn’t going to jump in head-first and chase after Strikeforce fighters now that the promotion has folded up shop.

And, considering the UFC has already signed several of the main fighters from the promotion, it seems to be a good idea by Bellator.

“The door is open to it, but there’s never like a lock in on it and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to do that for sure,’” said Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, in an interview with MMAWeekly Radio recently. “You look at it on a case-by-case basis, you see where a guy fits in and if he’s got the right fit for the organization, and if so, there aren’t any handcuffs on us doing something like that. You could see it.”

Rebney added that Bellator has been scouting the Strikeforce roster for some time now, saying, “a lot of us have known and thought (disbanding) was going to happen for a long time. We’ll see what happens and who’s available.”

The UFC has signed already signed such fighters as Daniel Cormier, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley, Caros Fodor and others in the last few weeks.

Roger Gracie Vs. Anthony Smith Rumored For January Strikeforce Event

Gracie (5-1) decided to drop down to middleweight after a knockout loss to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in 2011. He scored a decision over Keith Jardine earlier this year.

Smith is 17-8 in his career, including a 2-1 mark while competing for Strikeforce.

Report: Gilbert Melendez Injured, Out Of Strikeforce Title Fight In January

Cesar Gracie, the trainer for Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, has confirmed news of “El Nino’s” exit from a planned January title fight with Pat Healy at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy.

UFC president Dana White made mention of an injury to Melendez during a fan chat on Montreal Gazette, and Gracie confirmed the news through Tatame.

“We will focus on his recovery,” Gracie said. “With the end of the show, he should migrate to the UFC.”

Strikeforce’s January card is slated to be the final for the promotion, according to reports. Melendez, as one of the top lightweights in the world, will likely sign with the UFC.

Final Strikeforce Event Will Take Place In Oklahoma City

Well, Oklahoma MMA fans will get an opportunity to see the end of Strikeforce, as Oklahoma City has been selected as the host for the January 12 card.

The event will feature three title fights and Daniel Cormier in action. More bouts are expected to be announced shortly.

“We’ve built an absolutely stacked card for Oklahoma City and the Showtime viewers,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. “We have three awesome title fights featuring some of the best fighters to ever grace the Strikeforce cage.”

Thursday night, it was reported that Strikeforce will fold up show following the card, with the majority of the main event fighters expected to join the UFC.

Strikeforce was originally set to air an event on Showtime from Oklahoma City earlier this month, but that card was cancelled. It marked the second such event to be scrapped by the promotion.

Report: Ronda Rousey Signs With UFC, Strikeforce Folding After January

It’s been an interesting day of news for Strikeforce.

On one hand, three title fights have been signed for a January event, along with Daniel Cormier taking part in the action.

However, if TMZ - a celebrity gossip site – is true, January will also mark the end of Strikeforce.

The site is reporting that Ronda Rousey, the current Strikeforce women’s champion, has signed with the UFC and that the promotion will seize to exist after the new year.

Rousey will become the UFC 135-pound female champion, according to the report, and will face either Sara McMann, Cris Cyborg and Miesha Tate in her UFC debut.

No Strikeforce official, or even a source within MMA, was credited in the story.
