Strikeforce may be coming close to being the second MMA promotion to air a live MMA event on primetime network television, specifically NBC. The organization’s late Saturday night half-hour programming “Strikeforce on NBC,” which airs fights from past events, has done surprisingly well in the ratings, prompting talks between the media giant and Strikeforce to broadcast a live event on the network.
While nothing is close to being a done deal, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, has informed MMARated.com that their upcoming event scheduled to take place the weekend of September 19 at the Playboy Mansion could possibly be broadcast on NBC. Coker also revealed a few of the fighters who will be on the card.
* Kazuo Misaki will be making his Strikeforce debut on the Playboy card. Also scheduled to fight at the mansion is Renato “Babalu” Sobral, the winner of Thomson/Melendez and, assuming his visa issues are straightened, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos.
That’s a solid preliminary list of names for a Strikeforce card, however the organization will likely need to bring its biggest guns—Cung Le and Frank Shamrock—if it hopes to be successful on primetime network television.
That’s of course if they land a deal with NBC. First things first.
