Shogun Rua Preparing For UFC 93 Clash With Coleman

It looks like Shogun is working hard to get in top shape for his UFC 93 fight against Mark Coleman. Here’s to hoping the old Shogun shows up on Jan. 17. No one wants to see the Shogun from UFC 76 again.

Start Saving, UFC 93 & 95 Won’t Be Free

Spike TV LogoWhen you go to fill out your wish list for Santa Claus this year, you might want to include “gift card to cable company.”

From Dec. 27 to Jan. 31, there won’t be just three pay-per-views to buy—UFC 92, Affliction, and UFC 94—you’re also going to have to pay for the overseas UFC 93 event on Jan. 17. That’s $175 in the span of 36 days, and even more if you order them in HD. You won’t get any relief in February either. UFC 95 is scheduled for Feb. 21 in London, England. You’ll have to pay for that one too.

So, if you’re wondering why the UFC is trying to take all your food and gas money, here’s your answer. Blame Spike TV.

The simple reason why both these cards won’t be airing on Spike is because the network has a yearly production budget that kicks in on Jan. 1, and they don’t want to pay the high price of airing a UFC PPV from Europe so early in the year. The network was able to air two events in December and UFC 89 in October because it’s the end of the year and they had extra money in the production budget.

Ah, good old fashioned budgetary concerns. Two words. This blows.

Weekend Round-Up: Lesnar, Couture, Filho, Shogun, Arona, Carano, Tito, Fitch, CSAC Resignation

Flex Magazine Randy Couture & Brock LesnarWe’re a week away from the big fight, so expect to see a ton of articles, videos, promotion etc. for Couture vs. Lesnar across the web this week. For starters, here’s Randy and Brock on the cover of Flex Magazine. MMA Junkie has two articles up today recapping a UFC 91 media conference call. Here’s a couple quotes.

Randy Couture:

UFC 93 Already A Sell Out

O2 Dublin

Ticket sales may be lagging in Vegas for UFC 91 and UFC 92, but they certainly aren’t in Dublin for UFC 93 as MMA Junkie is reporting the event has sold out in just two weeks.

UFC UK Division President Marshall Zelaznik commented on the sell out in a press release issued today.

“The UFC brand of mixed martial arts is the already biggest indoor sport in the UK, and we are ecstatic that the popularity and passion for the UFC is matched across the Irish Sea. This is our seventh successive sell-out in the British Isles since April of 2007, and we now hold records in six of the biggest arenas in all of Europe. We have the most dedicated and passionate fans in sport and we are thrilled to be bringing some of the biggest names in the sport to the Emerald Isle early in the New Year.”

Obviously, this is really good news for the UFC. The abysmal US economy has adversely affected their ability to sell tickets to their two biggest events in 2008 (although they certainly haven’t helped themselves with their ridiculous prices). This has to boost their confidence that even in a struggling world economy their product is still viable overseas.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Shogun Rua and Mark Coleman headlining the card either.

Shogun Wants Revenge

Mark Coleman vs Shogun Rua

Apparently, time doesn’t heal all wounds, or more appropriately, bury all grudges. On Jan. 17, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua will get the opportunity to avenge his loss from 2006 against Mark Coleman at UFC 93. As you probably already know, at PRIDE 31 Shogun broke his arm when he used it to brace his fall from a Coleman take down, thus resulting in the loss. Two and half years later, Shogun says he still has a score to settle. It wasn’t so much how he lost, but what Coleman apparently said behind his back, as he tells Fighters Only Magazine.

UFC Officially Announces UFC 93 In Dublin, Ireland; Rich Franklin & Dan Henderson To Headline (Update)

UFC LogoThat was quick. Often times, it’s weeks or even months before the UFC makes an official announcement regarding news that breaks early across the net. Like Randy Couture’s return to the Ocatagon, however, that’s not the case with reports from yesterday that suggested the UFC would be heading to Dublin, Ireland on Jan. 17 to hold UFC 93. The UFC made it official on UFC.com earlier this morning.

The UFC Reportedly Heading To Dublin, Ireland For UFC 93; Rich Franklin Possibly Headlining

UFC LogoIt looks like the UFC is holding two events in January again next year. According to a report Yahoo! EuroSport, the UFC is headed to the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland on Jan. 17 to hold UFC 93. The Super Bowl weekend event which is believed to be headlined by the GSP vs. BJ Penn II mega fight would become UFC 94.

It appears they already have a few names in mind for the trip to Ireland.
