Start Saving, UFC 93 & 95 Won’t Be Free (Update - Nevermind About UFC 95)

Spike TV LogoWhen you go to fill out your wish list for Santa Claus this year, you might want to include “gift card to cable company.”

From Dec. 27 to Jan. 31, there won’t be just three pay-per-views to buy—UFC 92, Affliction, and UFC 94—you’re also going to have to pay for the overseas UFC 93 event on Jan. 17. That’s $175 in the span of 36 days, and even more if you order them in HD. You won’t get any relief in February either. UFC 95 is scheduled for Feb. 21 in London, England. You’ll have to pay for that one too.

So, if you’re wondering why the UFC is trying to take all your food and gas money, here’s your answer. Blame Spike TV.

The simple reason why both these cards won’t be airing on Spike is because the network has a yearly production budget that kicks in on Jan. 1, and they don’t want to pay the high price of airing a UFC PPV from Europe so early in the year. The network was able to air two events in December and UFC 89 in October because it’s the end of the year and they had extra money in the production budget.

Ah, good old fashioned budgetary concerns. Two words. This blows.

[UPDATE 12/23/08 2:18PM ET] - Scratch that about UFC 95 being on pay-per-view. UFC.com now has UFC 95 listed to air free on Spike TV. It won’t be live since it’s an UK card, but I’m sure you won’t mind.

Sorry London, Anderson Silva’s Probably Not Going To Make It

Anderson SilvaSo much for wanting to fight as often as possible. Anderson Silva was believed to be fighting next in London at UFC 95, with early rumors pitting him against Chuck Liddell. The Liddell rumor fizzled out pretty quickly, however, Silva headlining UFC 95 stuck, at least until today when Dave Meltzer reported Silva would no longer fight on the card.

MMA Junkie caught up with Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, who had this to say about the change of plans.

Chuck Liddell vs Anderson Silva Rumor

While UFC 95 has been officially announced for February 21 at the O2 Arena in London, England, there has yet to be an announcement for the main event. Early chatter pointed to Anderson Silva and Chuck Liddell appearing on the card, possibly against each other. However, that didn’t seem too likely considering a report that suggested Dana White wasn’t too thrilled about the idea, not to mention Silva hadn’t even heard about the rumor of his next opponent.
