Sengoku Wants FEG To ‘Severely Reprimand’ Aoki, Other Notes From Japan

Shinya Aoki gives Mizuto Hirota the birdFans and media members weren’t the only ones who were disgusted with Shinya Aoki’s actions immediately following the Mizuto Hirota bout at Dynamite!! 2009. World Victory Road was too, and now they’re demanding that FEG take action and “severely reprimand” Aoki for his behavior.

Sengoku Is Still Alive And Kicking

Sengoku Raiden ChampionshipsWhen World Victory Road abandoned their own NYE card to join forces with FEG/DREAM for Dynamite!! 2009 it seemed as if Sengoku’s days were coming to end. Well, apparently not because Nightmare of Battle is passing along overseas reports that suggest WVR is currently mapping out their 2010 Sengoku Raiden Championships schedule of events.

NikkanSports writes that WVR announced that their next event will be held on March 7th at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. They are also planning to hold events in July and November and it looks like they want Ishii to return on the July event.

WVR director Inemura revealed that they are currently looking into holding 5 events in 2010 (would probably be March, April, July, September, and November).

According to another report NOB mentioned, there’s actually a possibility that a third promotion will emerge in Japan as well the possibility that DREAM and SRC will join forces.

Also, Hidehiko Yoshida plans to return for a retirement fight. The question is, for who? Sengoku would like to book him in a rematch with Satoshi Ishii, but since he’s a free agent they’ll have to compete with DREAM to sign him.

It will be interesting to see how the landscape of Japanese MMA looks at the end of 2010 because it sounds like it may go through a few changes this year.

Dynamite!! 2009: Aoki-Hirota & Kawajiri-Yokota Announced

Dynamite!! 2009 Banner

Another pair of DREAM vs. SRC bouts were announced for FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 at a press conference earlier this evening in Japan. Shinya Aoki and Tatsuya Kawajiri were expected to meet on the card, however they will take on Sengoku lightweights Mizuto Hirota & Kazunori Yokota instead.

Although not officially announced, Five Oz. is reporting that Melvin Manhoef will take on Kazuo Misaki in another DREAM vs. SRC bout.

The latest FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 fight card and event info can be found in our fight cards section.

FEG Announces DREAM vs. Sengoku For Dynamite!! 2009

Dynamite Dream & Sengoku

Japan’s worst-kept secret is now official. A press conference was held in Japan earlier today to announce that FEG (K-1 & DREAM) will hold their Dynamite!! 2009 event with World Victory Road’s Sengoku.

Sengoku’s big Satoshi Ishii vs. Hidehiko Yoshida fight will serve as the double main event along with Masato’s K-1 retirement fight. The plan is to book seven DREAM vs. Sengoku fights on the 18-19 fight card, although no specific match-ups were announced. Along with the rest of the card, the rules and the weight classes are still being discussed.

Despite Sengoku ditching their own NYE show large in part due to their unsuccessful attempts at securing a television deal and the loss of their primary sponsor Don Quijote, WVR’s GM says they will continue to hold events next year, but like similar instances in the past, not everyone is buying it.

Interestingly enough, it sounds like FieLDS who sponsors Dynamite!! won’t renew their contract next year which leaves the door open for Don Quijote (Japanese discount super-stores) to slide in and take their place. Except they might be looking to get a little more involved than merely being a sponsor. Now rumors are swirling that Don Quijote is actually interested in buying DREAM which is kinda crazy when you think about it. Would be like Wal-Mart owning Strikeforce (I think).

There’s definitely a lot going on behind-the-scenes across the Pacific these days. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Sengoku On Its Deathbed?

Sengoku LogoWhen fans try to predict the next mixed martial arts promotion to fail, the conversation usually centers around Strikeforce. While there’s no evidence to suggest Strikeforce isn’t healthy still, there is an organization overseas that appears to be on its last legs.
