Drew Fickett and Jake Shields had already been rescheduled to fight for the EliteXC Welterweight Championship on June 14 in Hawaii; Shields suffered a back injury that caused him to withdraw from their March 29 match at EliteXC/Strikefore: Le vs. Shamrock. Now it looks like the match will have to rescheduled once again due to a knee injury that Fickett sustained during training.
Jared Shaw, EliteXC VP, informed MMA Weekly on the news:
“Obviously the back injury happened (to Shields) and the easiest thing to do was move him to Hawaii to fight Drew. Unfortunately since then Drew Fickett has hurt his knee and he’s not going to be able to take that fight on June 14 and that will be rescheduled again.”
It’s now uncertain whether Shields will still participate on the card or perhaps move him to the July card on CBS.
Shields tells MMAWeekly:
“I think I could be okay to fight by (June 14), but I think opting for July would probably be the smartest thing. It would give me more time to rehab before jumping into sparring, and I think there would be a little more exposure with it being on CBS (in July).”
That sounds like a better idea. EliteXC has a couple big names but they’re few and far between. Their July card on CBS has been a concern in the MMA community due to its roster’s lack of depth. Having a top welterweight in Shields fighting on that card would certainly be a great first step.
