The drama never ends with Nick Diaz. It’s no wonder he’s full of conspiracy theories, with all the things that happen with him. After being pulled off the DREAM.3 card by EliteXC because the event was too close to EliteXC’s Hawaii show on June 14 (where Diaz is scheduled to compete), EliteXC apparently has had a change of heart and is now allowing him to fight Katsuya Inoue in Japan this weekend, according to Sherdog.
When the bout was originally cancelled, Nick quit cutting weight and started to gain it back, leaving doubt as to whether he would still be able to make weight in time. According to Diaz’s trainer Cesar Gracie, Diaz spent all last night cutting weight before boarding a plane to Japan today.
“Tonight we will be pulling an all-nighter cutting weight,” Gracie said late Wednesday. “Nick was under the impression he wasn’t fighting. So now we have to get the weight back down before he leaves.”
It appears that ProElite CEO Doug DeLuca was feeling sympathetic toward the CSAC removing Nick from the EliteXC/Strikeforce show last minute in late March, and stepped in allowing Nick to compete in Japan.
Gracie stated that ProElite CEO Doug DeLuca was to thank for making the Diaz-Inoue bout happen.
“He thought Nick sort of got screwed with the whole California Athletic Commission thing.”
Under normal circumstances, Inoue would be a relatively easy opponent for Diaz, but Nick is now going to have to contend with the jet lag due to his late arrival in Japan and hard, last-minute weight cutting, so it will be interesting to see how he performs. I wouldn’t expect a 100% Nick Diaz, although you can always count on him giving it all he has.
