The wheels already appear to be turning in building the card for EliteXC’s second show on CBS. Fightline.com is reporting that EliteXC heavyweight Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva is set to co-headline the event. An opponent was not named. Silva, a former super-heavyweight, is easily the promotion’s best heavyweight fighter, and Gary Shaw has even gone as far as stating that Silva is the fighter that would knock Fedor Emelianenko off his throne.
Silva is not currently a top-ten ranked heavyweight, but many believe he has the potential to be after a few quality wins in the weight class. However, finding quality opponents for Silva is a challenge in of itself, as the majority of the world’s top heavyweights are tied up with the UFC and Affliction. That may not matter though, as Gary Shaw has stated that he is open to co-promoting events with Affliction, so perhaps there is chance that ‘Big Foot’ will have his shot at a top-ten heavyweight in the future.
Despite a very thin heavyweight division, Shaw confirmed on a media conference call that EliteXC is coming close to crowning a heavyweight champion, with Silva, Kimbo Slice, and James Thompson in the running. As much as EliteXC would love to be able to wrap a belt around Kimbo’s waist, they would have a very hard time justifying it without putting Kimbo in the cage with Silva. And that’s something I’m not sure EliteXC is ready to do or Kimbo is ready for.
