Fedor Emelianenko & Tim Sylvia Fighting For Heavyweight Title
[5 Oz.] was first alerted to the possible title component for the bout between Emelianenko and Sylvia during an off-the-record conversation that took place at Affliction’s New York press conference on May 21. A second source then confirmed earlier this week that a heavyweight title will in fact be at stake.
Unlike other organizations’ (non-UFC) title belts, this heavyweight title would hold some sort of legitimacy considering the depth of talent Affliction has in the their heavyweight division. If Fedor were to win, this title would likely be perceived as more legitmate than the UFC’s heavyweight title considering Fedor has already defeated the current UFC title holder, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, twice.
One question remains however.
It is still somewhat unclear what title the two will be competing for, as Affliction has stated in the past that it did not have any immediate plans to institute titles. If that is still the case, it creates the possibility of a sanctioning body becoming involved.
If a sanctioning body does get involved it would likely be WAMMA. WAMMA has done nothing but talk so far, so it will be interesting to see if this is the first action they take.
WAMMA and Affliction announce WAMMA’s inaugural WAMMA Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship Title Fight between #1 WAMMA Ranked fighter Russian combat fighting icon Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko in association with M-1 and # 4 WAMMA Ranked American fighting legend Tim “the Maine-iac” Sylvia at the “Affliction Banned” Event on July 19th 2008 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Megadeth Performing at “Banned?”
Affliction VP, Tom Atencio, mentioned a while back that they were working to secure a major band to perform at their inaugural event. It looks like Caleb over at MMAPredictions.com has stumbled upon who they landed.
So I return from a quick business trip today from San Francisco (no, not for this site! It’s called a day job!) and am in need of some dinner. I head down the street for a San Diego treat: a California burrito (carne asada, cheese, avocado, and hash brown potatoes inside!). As I sit down to eat, I pick up a copy of San Diego Citybeat and what do I see advertised? A advertisement for the upcoming Affliction: Banned event, which takes place in Anaheim, California on July 19th.
And stapled on Fedor Emelianenko’s head (of all places):SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY MEGADETH!
I almost choked on my burrito.
Since this event has turned into an early Christmas, is it too late to wish for Metallica too?
