Affliction announced earlier today that Jay Glazer, Frank Trigg and ‘Big’ John McCarthy will be calling the action at the organization’s debut MMA event.
“Affliction Banned,” the greatest MMA show of all-time, will feature an all-star broadcast team for its July 19th pay-per-view event, featuring the WAMMA heavyweight championship fight between the most lethal MMA heavyweight of all-time, Russian M1 superstar legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (27-1), and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia (24-4), live from Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Veteran television sports reporter and announcer, Jay Glazer, will handle blow-by-blow action while MMA fighter Frank Trigg serves as color analyst. Former MMA referee “Big” John McCarthy joins Glazer and Trigg as a ringside commentator and to conduct interviews. Legendary Michael Buffer of “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble” fame will be the ring announcer.
Noticeably missing from the list is former PRIDE FC and current EliteXC broadcaster Mauro Ranallo, as he was previously thought to be a part of broadcast team for Affliction’s inaugural event. There have not been any reports as to why he wasn’t included, although I would imagine Showtime and EliteXC had something to do with it. Ranallo is still expected to be on the Canadian broadcast.
Most fans familiar with Ranallo’s work either love him or hate him. I fall in the former category. While Mauro does tend to be a little over the top at times, he brings an energy and passion to the sport that is unparalleled in my opinion. You have take a lot of what he says with a grain of salt, but he often has me cracking up, although I will admit as of late some of his metaphors have just been ridiculous. Needless to say, I’m a bit disappointed. Mauro’s calling of Fedor’s fight against Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ was fantastic, so I was definitely looking forward to him calling the Fedor/Sylvia fight. Not a big deal though.
It’s also interesting that Affliction landed UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer’s brother, Michael Buffer, to be their ring announcer. I doubt he came cheap.
We’re less than two weeks away!
Oh, for you enquiring minds out there, the reason I am not going to be announcing the Affliction: Banned pay per view on Saturday,July 19th in Anaheim is due to my contractual obligations to Elite XC. I am looking forward to anchoring the Fight Network’s extensive coverage of the Affliction event and I know that Jay Glazer,Frank Trigg and the Fight Network’s own “Big” John McCarthy will do a superlative job of calling the action.
