The question of who Jake Shields will fight next has been answered, and no, it’s not Matt Lindland. Jared Shaw, busy making the media rounds today, confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that Shields will defend his EliteXC Welterweight Championship against Paul Daley.
“Jake Shields and Paul Daley have a date on Oct. 4. Both fighters have verbally agreed. Bout agreements are out and we’re just waiting for them to come back in.
“Unlike some others, these are two guys that I trust their word.”
Both fighters were rumored to be fighting on EliteXC’s Sept. 20 Showtime event until it was canceled. Daley, already in preparations for Sept. 20, decided to publicly call Shields out in hopes of getting the title fight on Oct. 4.
Shaw also clarified the consequences to the ultimatum he gave to KJ Noons earlier today. Apparently, if Noons doesn’t accept the bout agreement to fight Nick Diaz on October 4, the promotion has the right to extend the term of Noons’ contract.
In what should help ease many angered fight fans, Shaw denied reports that Sean Gannon is the front runner to face Kimbo Slice at SNF III. Shaw simply said, “There are several options we’re considering right now. Gannon is not the guy.”
