Last we heard, a fight between Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic and Alistair Overeem was not going to be booked by DREAM. Instead, there were rumors of Cro Cop potentially facing Sergei Kharitonov or even middleweight Yoshihiro Akiyama in hopes of drawing much needed ratings.
However, according to a report in the Croatian media, it looks like Overeem and Cro Cop may get their wish after all. I don’t know Croatian and the Google translation of the page isn’t exactly perfect, but it does seem to say what Japan-MMA posted—Cro Cop will fight Overeem at DREAM.6 and DREAM has confirmed it.
Nothing has been posted on DREAM’s website but, but MMANews.com has another article that seems to support the Croatian report.
WORLD-MMA is reporting that Omasuki Fight magazine in Japan has put together a trend of announcements on Japanese television that suggest Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic could possibly face K-1 King Semmy Schilt at DREAM 6 in September.
The most notable information that came out of the reports was of a TV spot for DREAM 6 that advertises “Cro Cop” fighting on the card. As for his opponent,
“In one fight, PRIDE Champ Mirko has to deal with the man that dropped K-1 Champ Mark Hunt”
You probably noticed that the quote mentions Semmy Schilt and not Overeem. That could be the result of WORLD-MMA drawing the wrong conclusions. Schilt wasn’t the only man to defeat Hunt recently. Overeem did it as well at DREAM.5. The quote does say “dropped,” which wouldn’t be accurate as Alistair submitted him, but that could have just been misinterpreted.
Hopefully, this turns out to be the case. Like I’ve said before, this really is the perfect match for both fighters at the current stages in their respective careers.
