Oh no. Not again. Yep, right on the heels of a report earlier this week from Kevin Iole that Rampage Jackson and Wanderlei Silva would likely be squaring off for the third time at UFC 93, instead of 91 or 92, comes this report from The Sun that quotes Rampage saying he’s definitely fighting on Dec. 27.
QUINTON ‘RAMPAGE’ JACKSON has confirmed he WILL return to fight inside the Octagon before the end of the year.
And his opponent will be none other than ex-Pride FC superstar Wanderlei Silva – IF the Brazilian accepts the terms the UFC have offered him for the fight.
“I fight on December 27 and I’m hoping it’s against him. And if it is I’m going to be ready to steamroller him.”
Rampage also mentions that several fighters have been offered to fight him, but they’ve all turned it down. No names were mentioned or reasons why. The interesting part of this story is it emphasizes “IF” Wanderlei accepts the terms. Sounds like money is one of the big factors, and likely one of the reasons the rumors of this fight have been all over the place.
As MDS of AOL Fanhouse points out, this fight would make the most sense for UFC 92. The event still needs a strong co-main event, and the UFC may not feel like Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans is strong enough. UFC 91 already has Couture vs. Lesnar and UFC 93 supposedly has BJ Penn vs. GSP II, so those events really don’t need another drawing fight to perform well.
Personally, I don’t care which event the fight takes place on, and even if it happens within the rumored time frame. I just want to see Wandy fight again sometime this decade. As Fightlinker pointed out, Silva’s fought for a total of 36 seconds in 2008. I don’t know if it’s because of the clusterf*ck that is the UFC light heavyweight division, or if it’s behind the scenes contract disputes, but either way he needs to get back in the Octagon soon. Hell, I’d even settle for a destruction of Elvis Sinosic at this point.
