If Sokoudjou still wants to fight Shogun Rua, he’s going to have a much harder time making that fight happen now. According to Five Oz., Sok has been released by the UFC.
Light heavyweight competitor Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou can be added to the list of fighters recently released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
FiveOuncesOfPain.com first became aware of Sokoudjou having been dropped from the UFC roster last week but could not find a second source for verification. However, published reports have surfaced on the Internet today confirming his release.
Sok’s release really shouldn’t come as a surprise. He had a huge amount of hype behind him when he signed the UFC deal because of his knockout wins over Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, which led to a pretty decent pay check. However, he didn’t exactly live up to the hype suffering losses to Lyoto Machida and Luiz Cane. The fact of the matter is, Sok was and still is a relatively green mixed martial artist, which is one of the reasons his quick rise got so much attention. In the Machida fight, he showed he still needs a ton of work on the ground, and against Cane, he learned going full throttle and throwing nothing but power shots isn’t going to get you far, especially when everyone knows it’s coming.
Sok seems to have a lot of talent, so hopefully this time away will allow him to evolve and improve as a fighter. I think he can be a top competitor in the UFC if he’s willing to learn, it’s just going to take time. I’m sure we’ll see him back at some point.
Sok wasn’t the only UFC fighter to be released recently. Jorge Gurgel also got let go, however he immediately got signed by Strikeforce. Hopefully, he’ll finally learn to use his strengths. Just being exciting apparently isn’t going to cut it. You have to do something they call winning too.
