Badr HariJust a week out from Japan’s big NYE event, Fields Dynamite!! 2008, it looks like Alistair Overeem finally has an opponent. He will be fighting none other than K-1 heavyweight king Badr Hari under K-1 rules. Very tough fight for Overeem, I know, however, in the interest of fairness, the two have also agreed to meet again in early 2009 in a MMA rules match.

This news is coming straight from Alistair Overeem’s official website (via Free Fight Videos)

The discussion was who would fight under whos rules first and Alistair stepped up first! Alistair will fight Badr Hari at K1 Dynamite 31 december under K1 rules! Since Badr Hari challenged Alistair he sees no other option than cause another demolition and knock Badr Hari out! Both fighters agreed to fight in MMA rules early 2009!

Well, so much for the Cro Cop rematch anytime in the relative near future. As Robert pointed out to me, you almost get the sense that FEG is trying to protect Cro Cop. He still has drawing power in Japan, and I’m sure FEG wants it to stay that way. I hope that’s not the case. I don’t want to see Mirko fight a bunch of cans in 2009, and I like to think he doesn’t want to do that either.

Of course, they did book a “fight” with a cartoon character so who the hell knows what they’re thinking.

Moving on, remember that crappy rumor about Thales Leites getting the next middleweight title shot against Anderson Silva? Yeah, well, it looks like it’s going to come true.

While speculation has placed UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (23-4 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in a number of matchups in both the middleweight and light-heavyweight division, it appears likely that “The Spider” will be defending his title at an as-yet-unannounced date in April.

Sources close to the bout have indicated to ( that Silva and fellow Brazilian Thales Leites (14-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) have verbally agreed to the contest. Bout agreements have yet to be signed.

While an official date and venue for the event have yet to be announced, the sources indicated that the UFC is eyeing a return to Montreal for the card.

I don’t know about you, but I’m about as excited for this fight as I am for my dentist appointment in a couple weeks. Whatever happened to Anderson fighting the loser of one of the UFC 92 light heavyweight bouts? Or Yushin Okami?

Lame. Although I did say the same thing about Chuck and Rashad and look what happened there. Leites couldn’t actually pull out the upset, could he? Nah, that’s just crazy talk.

Quick update: says Silva vs. Leites is signed for UFC 97 on April 18.
