Cris Cyborg SantosCris ‘Cyborg’ Santos now has an opponent for the upcoming Strikeforce “Shamrock vs Diaz” card, and it’s not Gina Carano.

According to a press release issued today, Cyborg will be facing a woman with the one of the oddest nicknames I’ve heard thus far, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano.

Rival forces from different worlds will meet when women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) of Brazil collides with “Smack Girl” Champion Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) of Japan, in a 145-pound showdown, live on Saturday, April 11, part of Strikeforce’s Shamrock vs. Diaz stacked fight card, and airing live on SHOWTIME from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

“I know Hitomi Akano is the best Japanese female fighter today, but I am prepared for any situation and will always be looking for the knockout,” said the 23-year-old Cyborg, who will make her Strikeforce debut on April 11.

I admittedly don’t know much about Akano other than she’s faced a few tough opponents in the past like Tara LaRosa, whom she lost to. I imagine Coker and co. don’t want to put Cyborg in a fight there’s a good chance she’ll lose with the Carano fight looming, so I’m just gonna go ahead and blindly take Cyborg in this one.

As for Gina, still no word on what her status is yet, but damn, those Maxim pics sure were something to look at, weren’t they? Sorry, back on track, hopefully, Strikeforce gets Gina on board ASAP so the biggest fight in women’s MMA can finally take place. It deserves to be on CBS anyways, so perhaps this is a blessing in disguise.

On a semi-related note, there’s now rumblings that Robbie Lawler may in fact fight on the April 11 card instead of the May event.
