Demian MaiaThe middleweight fight that should happen—Demian Maia vs Nate Marquardt—is going to happen.

According to a post on Demain Maia’s official website (via MMAJunkie), Maia is set to take on Marquardt at UFC 102, which is expected to take place in Portland, Oregon on August 29.

Immediately following Maia’s and Marquardt’s victories over Chael Sonnen and Wilson Gouveia, respectively, at UFC 95, many fans, including myself, called for the two middleweights to meet to determine who deserves a shot at Anderson Silva’s title. However, not too long after, there were rumblings that Maia would get the next title shot, but that seemingly vanished into thin air following the Silva vs. Leites debacle.

At this point, even a win for Maia probably won’t be enough to earn himself a crack at UFC gold now that the UFC seems intent on only giving Anderson “big” fights, but a win for Marquardt could open their eyes enough to consider a Silva rematch for him.

We’ll see, but for now, Maia vs. Marquardt is a great fight and a true test for Maia against a very well-rounded fighter, and one I’m absolutely looking forward to.
