You might want to add “Pretty Boy” Floyd and Oscar De La Hoya to your Xmas card list this year.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is scheduled to fight Juan Manual Marquez on September 19, the same night as UFC 103. De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions decided to add three more quality fights — a move rarely seen in boxing — to the card to help draw in more fans. The UFC, never ones to be outdone, are apparently responding with this.
The UFC is known for its creative marketing and counter-programming tactics and it looks like the MMA giant has come up with a good plan to beef up awareness for UFC 103.
The UFC will air a two-hour telecast of the UFC 103 undercard commercial free on Spike TV as a lead in for the UFC 103 main card on pay-per-view, according to a source at the UFC.
Here’s the undercard line-up.
Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller
Jim Miller vs. Thiago Tavares
Dan Lauzon vs. Rafaello Oliveira
Paul Daley vs. Brian Foster
Drew McFedries vs. Tomasz Drwal
Jason Brilz vs. Eliot Marshall
Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Igor Pokrajac
Robert Emerson vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
Pretty sweet, it’s kind of like getting a Fight Night card before a pay-per-view. Just wonder if there will be any backlash when UFC 104 rolls around and Spike is airing old reruns of Jesse James is a Dead Man instead of live fights.
Update: Spike TV made it official today. They are showing the UFC 103 prelims live and commercial free but only as an hour lead-in, not two hours. Spike plans to show Efrain Escudero vs Cole Miller and Drew McFedries vs Tomasz Drwal.
