Brandon Vera vs. Krzysztof Soszynski: Vera and Ksos put on a rather lackluster fight. To make a long story short, Vera outpointed Ksos on the feet to earn the unanimous decision. Vera didn’t look terrible, but still doesn’t look like the Vera from a couple years ago. Affliction is back!
Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia: Well, that was quick. Demian Maia lunged at Marquardt with chin exposed and Marquardt drilled him with a right hand right on the button. Game over for Maia. Kinda disappointing to be honest. I think we all wanted to see it go at least a full round. Good win for Marquardt though. Will he get the title shot? Marquardt vs Silva? Marquardt vs Henderson? Silva vs Henderson?
Chris Leben vs. Jake Rosholt: Jake Rosholt gets his first UFC win against a tough Chris Leben. He outlasted Leben’s onslaught in the first two rounds, got on top in the third and secured the arm triangle for the win.
Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva: Keith Jardine’s chin strikes again. Thiago Silva caught Jardine with a short left hook much like Rampage caught Wanderlei Silva with last December. Jardine went down, Silva following him with strikes putting him out. Tough loss for Jardine. He’s obviously good enough to be in the UFC, but he’s going to have a tough making it to the top of the division with that chin of his.
Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: What a great fight between two legends. It was a fight that should have happened a long time ago, but much like Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva, they more than made up for it with an epic war. Nogueira definitively answered all the questions about his performance or lack thereof against Frank Mir. He was sharp on his feet and took Randy’s punches like they were nothing. I think it’s safe to say the staph infection and bum knee were the reason he looked so horrible last December, not because he’s washed up. And how tough is Randy Couture? How many times was he rocked and nearly choked out? Three times, once a round? I can’t remember exactly, but there’s no doubt Randy is a warrior who still has a ton of heart. I’m not sure where he goes in the heavyweight division at this point, but judging by his post-fight interview it doesn’t sound like he’s ready to hang it up. As for Nogueira, he definitely asked for the title shot. Will he get it? I don’t know, but I could see him take a beating from Brock or Shane and pulling a submission out of his back pocket like he has so many times before. To be honest though, I want to see the Mir rematch. There’s no question now it could be a much different fight.
No matter who Nogueira fights next though, he’s not done, and that’s pretty exciting.
