Herschel WalkerOh this isn’t going to end well.

At an age when most professional athletes are 10-15 years removed from their careers, Herschel Walker is trying to get another one started. MMA Fanhouse is reporting that the 47-year-old football legend has signed a contract to fight in Strikeforce.

Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz said it’s too early to speculate when the 47-year-old will make his debut with the organization but it will probably be sometime in 2010.

“This isn’t a publicity stunt or a gimmick,” Afromowitz said. “Herschel Walker has tremendous athleticism, and he has always shown that off the gridiron. He’s accomplished a lot in his life and in the world of sports. His accomplishments speak for themselves, and we hope that his athleticism can transition into a successful MMA career.”

From what I can tell Walker has zero professional fights under his belt. His martial arts experience appears to be limited to a sixth-degree black belt in Taekwondo, though he is about to start a 8-12 week training camp with AKA. Furthermore, he was set to appear on a reality show with Jose Canseco that would have culminated in a fight between the two at the show’s conclusion, but the show never made it to television (gee, can’t imagine why). We know why Jose Canseco competed for DREAM earlier this year, so someone please tell how this isn’t a “publicity stunt or gimmick?”

Well, even if it is, there’s no reason to get upset about it, just as long as they don’t try to stick him in there with Fedor. Can you imagine how pissed Hitler would be if that happened?
