Machida vs Shogun

The UFC held a teleconference today with Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to hype up UFC 104. Rampage and Rashad, they are not, but hey, at least they’re definitely fighting.

The gist of their comments can be summed up by Machida.

“We know each other. We respect each other. But at the end of the day, we want the same thing.”

Both fighters have been training hard for the fight. Shogun has spent the last four months training in Curitaba at UDL with the majority of the same coaches and trainers he’s spent his entire career with. He feels he has his rhythm back, his knee is 100% and he’s been training in an official size cage, which he admits took awhile to get acclimated to. Meanwhile, Machida is approaching this fight not as the champion, but as a hungry challenger trying to capture the title. He’s spent a lot of time with his strength and conditioning coach developing the knockout power we saw against Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva. Both are chasing the same dream, but only one can win next Saturday night.

They may not be generating a lot of heat with their words, but they both seem physically and mentally prepared for a five-round war which will hopefully make for a great fight. I know I’ll be watching.
