MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the event that [Cung] Le has verbally agreed to face slugger Scott Smith (16-6) at the recently announced “Strikeforce: Evolution” event on Dec. 19 in San Jose, Calif.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker on Thursday told MMAjunkie.com that a main event for “Evolution” had yet to be determined, but the heavily anticipated welterweight title fight between top contenders Nick Diaz and Jay Hieron would not fill that role. A bout between vaunted strikers and California residents Le and Smith might work well in the slot.
Cung Le has been off making movies for what feels like a lifetime now, but apparently he’s found time in his busy schedule to give his fans what they’ve been asking for since he defeated Frank Shamrock for the Strikeforce middleweight championship in March 2008. He vacated the title, but that doesn’t mean he can’t put on an exciting fight and what better opponent to guarantee a war with Le than Scott Smith? Best news of the week.
In other Strikeforce news, Scott Coker told Sherdog.com he hopes to bring Shinya Aoki over from Japan for a card sometime in the first quarter 2010. Aoki is currently in Chicago attending this weekend’s big event and word is he’s looking for Strikeforce to make him an offer.

Update: Looks like Le vs. Smith came together quick this weekend. Sherdog says the bout is expected to be announced during tonight’s broadcast.
